April 4, 201214 yr ok after much beating, I'm gonna add a 4-port controller and 4 more drives to the system (has 6 now)... digging about says this should be an acceptable 4-port card... http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0010VDI0M/ref=oh_o01_s00_i00_details (Startech PEXSATA24E) supposed to be identical to the Adadptec and compatible with 4.7 (still there) and 5.x. I've had it in a new build for a few days preclearing two new Hitachi's... on a Biostar A55MH ($49 for a 6 port board, not bad) w/an AMD A4-3300 (note, seems to work fine with 5.x will probably be the base of my next build) now doing this I've noticed some weirdness.. not bad weirdness, just weirdness... I have the drives to be pre-cleared on the external card, nothing on the m'board, so I could exercise it too. when started up (flash plugged into the m'board) the two drives on the card came up as sda and sdb, the flash as sdc. when I stick the card in the existing system, will it's drives show up as sda, sdb, sdc, sdd and push the names of all the existing drives down, invalidating the config? should/could I move 4 of the m'board drives to the external card, then the last two that are on the m'board so they maintain their exising names and not mess up config? would that make it worse? Don't say 'go to 5.x and it will sort it out..." I still can't get to 5.x (see other threads).. yet... Yes I'm tempted to wait till I can get this box up to 5.x but I don't know how long it will take to sort that out.
April 6, 201214 yr Forgive me if I'm speaking out of turn.. but I'm about to do something similar tomorrow when my new controller comes in.. I believe what you do is Screen shot your devices page.. and after booting with all disks "working" reassign them to the correct order and make sure the new disks go into the previously unused slots.
April 6, 201214 yr ^^^ Device assignment is dependent on when unRAID detects the drive...<and yes 5.x does resolve this> But - it is easy...take a screenshot of your devices page and reassign to the correct slots. Oftentimes, you'll start back up just fine - but just in case.
April 6, 201214 yr I do not personally own this card. but, I have seen a few warnings about them. There are rumors that because the sata channel runs through the jumpers to select what port you are using (internal vs exexternal), that people have seen reduced performance and data corruption on the jumpered ports. I would search the forums a little and see what others have said. also, for a few dollars more, you can get the 8 port SASLP-MV8. the downside is you would have to get a $10 breakout cable from monoprice with the supermicrocard.. (or good thing for easier cable management)
April 7, 201214 yr Just put in an adaptec card with one new disk on it...that new disk turned into sda and what was parity went to sdb... Funny though the array came right up I didn't even change disk assignments. I'm on 4.7. Either way. Pre clear still running on new disk.
