Best touchscreen remote for HTPC

Featured Replies

i didnt want to hijack another thread kind of similar  :o but i want to use a harmony style remote and by that i mean one that will turn on all necessary devices with the touch of one button. heres my set up. my HDTV my computer (that is always in sleep not turned off) Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, and my av receiver. If i also want this remote to be touch logitech has this remote 1100 Advanced Universal Remote but i cant figure out how much of a computer it will control if any. i understand i may need an rf adapter possibly the one logitech makes?...

im ok not having full control of the computer this is not why i would be interested in the remote. although if it did how amazing would that be..ha..not looking to be judged either  :o i know its an unnecessary buy lol...is there a remote out there that anyone things may work for me or if you know if this 1100 harmony remote works with comps? thanks

urc can control consumer electronics and electrical appliances, afaik. not sure about touch.

if i want to control consumer electronics and electrical appliances, id use urc.

if i want touch, i use ipad.

if i want practical, i use cheap remote control.

^^^funny thing is....I end up using all three (or 4 or 5) - at the same time. ;D

Once you get a Harmony set up you won't want to use anything else. Even though lots of remotes will control multiple devices, you have to constantly tell them which device you want to control. With the Harmony it knows what device to control for each command.

I don't know about the 1100 but I have a Harmony 880. It doesn't do rf but the ir works fine with the ir receivers commonly used with Windows MediaCenter, and I have successfully used it to control XBMC. You can find more info on the logitech forums or the xbmc wiki or forums.

thanks for all the suggestions i dont want to do ipad or iphone because i want this to permanently be on the coffee table. and i want guest to be able to use it not have to guess which app to open up. i dont believe the 1100 is ir im pretty sure its rf.

if you got your 880 to work with xbmc im sure the 1100 will...maybe lol probably wouldnt turn the computer on or wake it up from being asleep correct?

urc looks pretty good but best i can tell it needs a professional install because of that probably a little outside of budget. best price for features i can find is the harmony 1100 but i just dont know how much of my computer it will control ie. waking it up from sleep...thanks again everyone!

Just looked at the 1100 on Logitech site. I'm sure it does IR. It also has the capability to control hidden IR devices with an RF extender.

Most devices only do IR so if it did not do IR it would not be able to control most devices.

My HTPC has Wake on USB, so if you can get that to work a Harmony should work to wake your computer if it is using a USB IR receiver.

Also, a touchscreen is certainly cool, but you kind of have to look at it to operate it. Other Harmony models have real buttons that you can operate by feel without taking your eyes off the TV. Maybe something to consider.

My WMC USB receiver will wake and sleep my computer via my Harmony remote. If your HTPC receiver/remote will do it then the Harmony can too.

I agree with the other comment. I've had a 659 for years and just bought a cheap 650 because they both have buttons I can feel for without looking.

ah yes very good observation about having to look at screen vs feel of buttons hadnt thought of that. (=

for an rf or ir extender does it have to be the one logitech makes? or would a cheaper one from newegg do the job? currently i use the dinovo mini for my HTPC which has a little dongle couldnt tell u if its rf or ir? lol thanks again!

Logitech only as far as I understand. It then re-transmits IR signals to the transmitters you connect to it.

Probably the logitech extender is needed to convert logitech rf into the appropriate ir, but there are plenty of ir extenders on the market and I would think they would probably work since in that case the remote would just be sending ir. Google ir remote extender.

I also have a dinovo mini. It is definitely rf of some sort, don't remember if it's bluetooth or some other wireless protocol.

IR only works with line-of-sight, although sometimes reflections allow it to hit the receiver with some obstructions. Most of my components are behind frosted glass and IR works just fine.
