April 5, 201214 yr I am in the early stages of planing out my unRaid build and I am trying to figure out if it can have some similar functionality as the Synology NAS I currently have. I have been reading a ton of posts and apologize if I happened to miss the answers right in front of my face, but I am still not sure on how you can access your music, photos, and files securely from a remote computer/location and via an Android phone? Synology comes with a bunch of aps for this via http, but I really only need to view photos and stream music to my phone, but I would also like to be able to download them (as well as files/movies) from a remote computer. I do not need to stream video remotely, I would rather download it if needed. I have seen things mentioned like Remote Potato and Orb which, to my understanding, access your home PC that is connected to your server, but I thought I read there is a way to install something like this on your cache disc - Subsonic? I also saw a post that recommended to never access your server remotely. Basically, is there a way to do what I need securely, and if so what is the best method?
April 5, 201214 yr The best way to access the content remotely is through a VPN. There are other things you can do like port forwarding for certain apps like airvideo, subsonic, twonky, etc but I am not going to explain how to do that here. I will leave it as an exercise for you to figure that out.
April 5, 201214 yr I installed VirtualBox on unRAID and a Windows 7 Virtual Machine on top of that. Under the Windows 7 Virtual Machine I can install regular windows apps (utorrent, etc...) including Logmein or TeamViewer for remote access.
April 5, 201214 yr If you only need to access the files, why not use your Syno interface to access the unRAID drives? Mount them via smb or nfs... You can also get notifications by sending the unRAID log entries to the Syno syslog server.
