Current Unraid Licensed User - How would I "restart" my journey with V7 instead of 6.12.x

Featured Replies

I planned to settle into Unraid in my environment in Mid 2024 - but for reasons I won't bother going into here - I suspended it's use - with a nod to coming back to it at a futire date.

Now that v7 is here - I am thinking about a poterntial "reintroduction" later this year. My question surrounds starting over - if all I have at this point is my existing 6.12.3 USB drive in the drawer here.

If/when I restart - I would like to go right to v7 and need to understand how to do this. I am aware of how the ID of the Flash drive plays into the license.

Some questions:

1. Does my old USB drive here matter in any way? I assume it does - and does the license need to be properly transferred from that drive?

2. Or am I overthinking this and just create a new drive with V7 and transfer the license to that drive? Or use a new drive?

If anyone can decode the correct order of operations here to ensure I do not mess up my license - I would appreciate it.

Cheers

I suspect you are overthinking it?

1.   Assuming you have a paid licence and not a trial one you can copy the licence file from the ‘config’ file on the flash drive then you re-use the same flash drive by creating a fresh 7.0 release on that drive and copying the saved licence file into the config file.   When Unraid boots it will come up a new install already licenced.

2.  Follow the same process as 1) on a new flash drive and when Unraid boots it will take you into the licence transfer process.

Thanks for the update - however - I just looked into my existing flash drive and there is a ton of files in the Config folder.

Nothing there screams "license file" to me.

Do you know the exact file name?

Depends on the license you have

anything that is *.key file

old system
trial.key basic.key plus.key pro.key should be in the config folder.

new system

starter.key etc etc..

you need to copy and move all .key files

Got it. And - I was looking at an old key.

Found the one from last summer and I do see a "Plus.key" on there - makes sense now.

So - in a complete "rebuild" scenario - do I simply move Plus.key OFF the flash drive, create the new v7 boot key with it and copy "Plus.key" back to the same spot I found it in?

I would recommend making a flash backup
webui > main > falsh > flasch backup

this zip file when extracted to a new flash drive and script ran to make bootable. is your entire current usb instance, keep that as a backup reference.

to start fresh
make a new USB (WITH a GUID...) on version 7 and copy the *.key file to the config folder on the new flash drive.

We are way past that. I do not have a Unraid server or an install or anything right now.

This key was created last summer, when I ran Unraid for a few weeks and then decided to bail on it - for specific reasons at the time.

All I have now is the flash drive from that install - with a full 6.12.11 install on it and of course my license key.

I want to retain the license that is bonded to this flash drive but redo it with v7 later this year.

if you have the 6.12.11 flash drive to make a backup copy the config folder.

if you want just the license file copy the *.key file somewhere to place fora  fresh v7 usb.

Otherwise when you launch your v7 trial you will need to contact support and have them change the license.

Its easier and auto without support sometimes if you have the old key in the new flash drive.

when the time comes and your ready you may need to email unraid support.

Create trial USB with creator to v7.  Use your activation code from original unRAID/ LimetTech email under Tools > Registration.  There is a spot to paste your activation link.  Once done, it will ask you if you want to transfer the license to your current USB and also blacklist the prior USB.  Once confirmed, your license is transferred.

If you want to keep the USB you have, just plug it in, let it boot up, and update os.  It is a surprisingly cooperative OS and since you don't seem concerned with preserving anything, it should fire right up with minimal issue.

Edit: A quick email to support and they can easily transfer your license to another USB as well.
