Tracking down issues with ataX.00 exceptions in DMESG

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've scrubbed Unraid forums to the best of my ability but been having an issue I am sure many have faced but could not find exact match or failed to fix it by using suggested fixes in those forum posts.

I am talking about this heap of mess

I've been randomly getting these link resets in my logs for **random** drives as well. There is no consistency to it. Some days there are no errors at all, sometimes one during the day and rarely 2-3+ in succession. I don't notice any effects, no data loss of any kind, parity checks always passed and whatever file I check all seem to be A-OK.

Looking at other posts out there, many have suggested checking SATA cables. I re-checked and re-seated all the cables (in the process even once accidentally yanked the cable while system was on so even got to test rebuild from parity :P) and nothing, plus since it happens to random SATA links each time (between 1-4) I don't believe I am so unlucky that all my 4 SATA cables are bad.

The only thing I get to latch on here is the fact that `SError` is a bit different than what many other forum posts have and I know they are related to some SATA error codes but this is outside of my domain expertise to fully understand.

Anyone has any idea what else I could do/try? This has been going on pretty much since day one I've used UNRAID but again have not noticed any bad side effects but that isn't to say there is no harm in it obviously.

Any power splitters in use?

I am using SATA power cable that came with my PSU (mine is Corsair, picture is just an example). Is that considered a power splitter?

no

If no splitters are in use, and you have already replaced the cables, it could be just a firmware issue with those disks, I also have some Toshiba disks where the models that start with a common serial show some ATA errors during high load, in any controller.

If you don't notice any effects, I would just ignore, next time you need to upgrade a disk, try using one for a different brand/model and then see if that one no longer shows the same issue.

I am using Seagate 4TB NAS Storage https://www.disctech.com/Seagate-ST4000NE001-4TB-SATA-Hard-Drive from my understanding these should have been pretty reliable. Do you have some recommendation going forward or is this just all luck these days?

I didn't replace cables so much as re-did the connections shuffling them around. I could of course change all of them but as states the errors happen on all ATA interfaces at random which leads me to believe this can't be all cables being bad :P I hope...

I don't see any bad side effects, just hoping this has no major implications in future. Server been running for 2 years now.

Just out of curiosity, what does this error even mean?

SError: { PHYRdyChg CommWake DevExch }

Those errors in general just mean a communication issue, but it then retries.
