UnRAID and XBMC... ok this is a screwy one.. even for me :)

Featured Replies

ok, Was going to drop in the new controller today, then go to 5b14 from 4.7 tomorrow.... but yesterday something really weird showed it's face. I've tracked it back and know when it started. I'm not saying this is an UnRAID problem, but I have to see if anyone has had the issue, or any ideas.. hang on to your hat.

Allright, right now I have two file servers set up holding out media library. BROADWAY is a WHS box with 16tb on it... BURBANK is the UnRAID box currently with 10TB (5x2tb drives+parity). Slowly will be migrating off the WHS box.

BROADWAY has two shares "Movies" and "TV Shows" (yeah original I know).. BURBANK the same, "Movies" and "TV Shows".

the folder breakdown on BURBANK

disk1 - /TV Shows

disk2 - /TV Shows

disk3 - /TV Shows

disk4 - /TV Shows

disk4 - /Movies

disk5 - /Movies

layout under /TV Shows..

/TV Shows

-- /Series

-----/Season

-------/Episode1

-------/Episodex

and under movies

/Movies

-- /Title

----- Movie

-- /Title

----- Movie

-- /Title

----- Movie

ok.. I migrate in the new items directly using the /disk-x shares. no problems with that

the shares in XBMC are addressed as

smb://BROADWAY/Movies

smb://BURBANK/Movies

and

smb://BROADWAY/TV Shows

smb://BURBANK/TV Shows

perfectly simple and straightforward.. has worked on the WHS box for a couple years, and had been working on the UnRAID box without issue since I started loading it up.

Until... I tried to upgrade the UnRAID to 5b14.

I didn't notice to the other day.. I had been moving in TV Episodes mostly for a while, but right after I did the aborted 5b14 update, I started migrating in Movies... stanard XBMC procedure, move in the new files, have it scan it's sources. No problem.

Then I noticed that the Movies I was moving in didn't appear in the XBMC Library.

I could look at the Movie share on BURBANK... yeah, there they were

I could go thru the File Manager of XBMC and... yeah, there they were, I could play them from there.

but they never would scan up in the library.

I could MANUALLY import them to the XBMC Library, and then they would show fine. I could remove them, rescan... and they wouldn't show up untll I manually added them back.

TV Shows, no issues, all would scan in fine.

But Movies.. nunyah...

.. if they were on /disk5

Movies on /disk4 worked PERFECTLY, migrate, scan, enjoy

/disk5... the Black Hole of Calcutta as far as XBMC was concerned.

Ok I thought, maybe /disk5 isn't spinning up fast enough (spindown time is 1 hour), so I did a manual spin up just before I started the library update scan.

Nope. Never showed.

I turned spindown off totally.

Nope.

I rebooted the server with spindown off.

Nope.

ok this is getting silly, so took a drastic step, wiped out the XMBC database and let it rescan everything (I had recently updated to XBMC 11.0 Eden, it was before I tried the 5b14 update) thinking something had gotten corrupted in the media database somehow..

4 hours later... everything was scanned back in... except what was on /disk5.

so, I turned off user shares and ran a 'clean' on the library (anything that couldn't be found would be removed.. everything on BURBANK)

I changed the shares  in XBMC to...

smb://BROADWAY/TV Shows

smb://BURBANK/disk1/TV Shows

smb://BURBANK/disk2/TV Shows

smb://BURBANK/disk3/TV Shows

smb://BURBANK/disk4/TV Shows

and

smb://BROADWAY/Movies

smb://BURBANK/disk4/Movies

smb://BURBANK/disk5/Movies

copied over a few new things to both /disk4 and /disk5, ran the XMBC library update and everything was added just fine, including /disk5

ok then. I turned user shares back on, rebooted the server.

changed the XBMC shares back to ..

smb://BROADWAY/Movies

smb://BURBANK/Movies

and

smb://BROADWAY/TV Shows

smb://BURBANK/TV Shows

ran the library clean again (removing everything on BURBANK) then reran the XBMC library update.

Everything came back...

except the what was on /disk5

I could manually add them, play them, etc...

So, here's the question.... what the smeg is happening to the /Movie user share?  :o

stumped everyone?  ???

Likely an issue with the new file permissions that v5 uses.  Have you tried from your XBMC computer to use windows to open any of the files on disk5?

the XMBC machine is Linux, as I said I can go thru the XMBC file manager and see/access/play the files fine. I can manually add them to the library.

XMBC and everything can access /disk5/Movies directly, it only fails to find them when going thru the Movies user share.

Everything works fine (access, play, write, etc) from Windows... and looking at the Movies user share from windows, can see/access things just fine.

Note: this weirdness is on 4.7 (after trying to go to 5b14 and reverting)

Hmmm.... Interesting but two differences....

This is XBMC not PLEX, but this is the new version of XBMC, so possibly... But..

It's only affecting the /disk5/Movies folder when referenced thru the Movies user share, /disk4/Movies would scan in thru the user share and the TV Shows user share work fine.

Here's another datapoint. Had pieces around and put together another XBMC box, using the old version of XBMC (10. 1 Dharma). Set it up using only the user shares and had it scan the library.

Everything scanned to the library..... Except what was on /disk5.  :o

A guess would be there is a problem with disk5. Possibly something corrupt in the file system, the disk is failing or you've stored a file name on there that isn't recognized/transferred over smb properly. It could be some type of permissions problem too. But, I'm not sure why the data would appear in the share and be accessible when accessing the disk directly.

I'll run a file check later tonight, but it's really bizzare, it failed scanning thru the user share, but I could manually add it going thru the user share or the disk share directly, and picks up scanning the disk share. Soon as I can get two more drives up and spinning, I'm gonna migrate everything off that drive, remove, preclear and then put it back
