January 18, 20251 yr New user here, and yesterday I built my first home NAS (mostly out of an old gaming PC), so I'm nerding out a bit. It's not server-grade, but I'm really happy with its performance and how easy it was to install Unraid. Its got dual-parity, 2.5Gbps networking, nvme drives for cache and UPS backup. Specs: - Gigabyte X570 Aorus Elite (am4 motherboard) - 2.5Gbps NIC - Ryzen 7 3700X (8-core cpu) - Gigabyte GTX 1660 (nvenc codec for plex transcodes) - G.Skill 32GB DDR4 (sadly this is not ECC memory) - x2 1TB nVME (cache drives in RAID-1 zfs) - x2 8TB Ironwolf 7200rpm (parity drives) - x1 8TB Ironwolf 7200rpm + x2 6TB WDRed 7200rpm (data drives in zfs) - Cyberpower 1500VA/1000W UPS I plan on setting up the following: - plex for streaming - move my Pihole currently running off a raspberry pi, to my new NAS - immich for google-like photos experience - tailscale for remote access One thing I'm not clear on -- power failures. I bought a UPS because I get occasional (albeit brief), power spikes/outages in my area. Can I have my NAS box automatically and safely shutdown before battery power runs out, in the event of a longer power outage? The UPS does have ethernet and USB ports -- how do I get Unraid and my UPS talking? Right now I've got about 1 hour remaining on my parity-sync -- looking forward to continuing the build.
