Can't Upgrade From 6.12.14 to 7.0.0 OS. Stuck at "Booting SMP configuration"

Featured Replies

As the title suggests.
I tried to upgrade from 6.12.14 to the new 7.0.0.
It didn't like it! I feel lucky that I had made a flash backup.

20250119_160552.thumb.jpg.63ef583cadbe7b26ddf9941035d6fdf7.jpg

I did a memtest, disabled all overclock and everything in bios was set to default settings.
I even flashed 7.0.0 onto a totally different thumb drive and tried that. Same result.

Advice?

Thanks in advance.

I even ran the update assistant.

As I had stated in the first post, I even tried a clean install on a totally different USB drive.

Test with a different flash drive using a stock Unraid v7.0 install to see if that boots.

I already did.
I even mentioned that in my posts.

Sorry, missed that, but if you cannot boot with a new flash drive using a stock install, it suggests a compatibility issues with the kernel used in 7.0 and your hardware, try the first 7.1 beta when it's out, it should be in a few weeks, it will use a newer kernel.

I've opened in a ticket in the meanwhile.
When it does release, I'll use the other thumb drive to test it first.

But just for informational purposes here's my system devices:

Try adding

nolapic idle=poll

To syslinux, cfg for the default boot option, after /bzroot, like this other example:

So the file will read:

  menu default
  kernel /bzimage
  nolapic idle=poll

  kernel /bzimage

Is that correct?

No.   You need to add it as an extra option to the ‘append’ lines.   Options on that line are space separated.

Okay. I'll give it a shot after my array finishes it's Parity check. It's a smaller system (only 204TB) so it's almost done (92.5%)

Tried this fix, it worked on my server thanks itimpi and JorgeB for your help. :D

That's good for testing, but that option will only leave only 1 core enabled, try noapic instead, just in case it also works, that would not disable cores.

You were having the exact same problem?
I've searched all over and couldn't find a solution.

@JorgeB, @itimpiI'm still waiting for my parity check to finish so it might not be until tonight that I give this a shot but assuming it works, what would be the appropriate permanent fix for this issue for everyone that runs into this problem? Will a fix be available in the latest update? Or will we all have to make those modifications to the syslinux.cfg before booting? How will that work exactly?

Yeah, @JorgeB linked me to your post, because I was having the same issue as you, thought we probably had similar hardware (my unraid is running on a i7 6700k / Asrock Z170 OC Formula / 16GB).

Will try noapic instead of nolapic and post the results here.  At the very least I managed to grab a USB backup this time, I was stressing as I thought I had before the update to 7, but I hadn't noticed the 'unsafe file' warning in brave and so it didn't save my 6.12.14 backup.

If noapic doesn't work, and since nolapic is not a good option, you can also try this:

dis_ucode_ldr

This will prevent the Intel microcode from loading, I read that it can also cause that error with some BIOS, but I think that the main culprit is likely a bad BIOS by Asrock.

noapic did not work for me (I left idle=poll after it, not sure if I was meant to).

dis_ucode_ldr does work though, thank you.  Using it with unraid, are there any downsides though, log term?

Also when unraid 7.1 releases @itimpimentioned in another thread it would use the 6.12 kernel, I wonder if that would fix the issues without having to disable intel microcode?

I have the latest bios already.

But we do have very similar setups. Same motherboard and chipset. I have a newer CPU so I think we might be able to rule out the CPU. I'm using 64GB of 4000 RAM but can only run it at 3600 obviously. Regardless, I tried running without ANY overclocking at 2133.

Curious, I wonder if it has anything to do with other peripherals of the board such as (not limited to) the USB 3.1 port?

So use dis_ucode_ldr and not noapic or noapic?

Yes, going to leave dis_ucode_ldr on and see how it goes.  Will post here if I have any issues with it, but looking good so far.

If noapic doesn't work, and since nolapic is not a good option, you can also try this:

dis_ucode_ldr

This will prevent the Intel microcode from loading, I read that it can also cause that error with some BIOS, but I think that the main culprit is likely a bad BIOS by Asrock.

So .. since @Mundvlhas positive results with this we can positively determine it's a BIOS problem with this particular board? Or is it the entire line of z170 chipset? Also, why are we just now having this issue? What changed in 7 that would prevent our boards from running? Will there be a permanent fix for this in 7.1 or is future updating of our systems going to be involving the removal of the USB drive, modifying the cfg file, reinserting it and hoping it works?
