Slow rebuild on replacement drive

Featured Replies

Hi I have replaced a 4TB WD RED with a 12TB WD RED and the ETA is on completion is over 3 days.

Write speeds are only around 40MB/s - Quick chat on discord suggests this is slower than normal. I have an Intel i5-13500, Docker and VM services are stopped. Was really expecting maybe a 1.5 days for rebuild to take place?

Diagnostics attached.

Nothing obvious logged, could be a slow disk or bandwidth problem, run the diskspeed container test, both the disks and controller tests.

It is what it is... If I have to wait 3 days fine but just wanted to make sure nothing wrong :)

@bally12345 Two days ago I replaced an 8TB parity drive with a 12TB WD Red. Parity sync took 25 hours which is in line with the 16-17 hours it took with the 8TB drive.

Three days seems excessive unless, as noted, you have a bandwidth constraint somewhere in your system.

Could the ETA just be incorrect? I have a Supermicro 826 chasis with Supermicro blackplane and LSI SAS 9201-8i... Going to leave it running and see if it actually takes 3 days or is done quicker.

When I did it, it did start out with a high estimate. It really picks up about 10% through. I think the average speed when it was done was reported at around 135 MB/s

The diskspeed test confirms that there is a big bottleneck with the controller, post the output from:

So the obvious thing that sticks out to me is

LnkSta: Speed 5GT/s, Width x1 (downgraded)

Is it safe to cancel the rebuild and check the controller is seated correctly or even move it to another slot and start the rebuild again as its only completed just over 6%

This is the problem, it's only linking at x1, it should be x8, check the slot speed you have the HBA installed in.

Not sure what's going on but Unraid won't boot into OS. Seems to stall at

"mount: overlay mounted on /lib"

Any suggestions?

Removed all pci devices, which disconnects the controller too and still can't boot unraid even in safe mode... Do I need recreate the USB or has something else gone wrong?

The USB is a SanDisk Cruzer Fit 16 GB from 2018 so pretty old now I guess.

  • Author

Created a new test usb with trial and that works, so will try restore backup of USB and hopefully that will get me back on track!

  • Author

Restored back up of the flash drive on new usb and same! Stops at mount: overlay mounted on /lib

Back to square one... Not sure what to do next so will be shutting down and calling it a night until 2mw.

You can try redoing the flash drive, backup the current one first and then recreate it using the USB tool and just restore the bare minimum, like the key, super.dat and the pools folder for the assignments, also copy the docker user templates folder (\config\plugins\dockerMan\templates-user), if all works you can then reconfigure the server or try restoring a few config files at a time from the backup to see if you can find the culprit.

Can this be done by simply copying the files to flash after mounting/export it to smb or do you have to shut down server each time?

Copied all the config folder over from back up and everything is looking ok, not started the array yet but have also noticed the issue I was having with half the RAM showing has disappeared too.

I have ordered a new USB from amazon which will be delivered today, just incase it was a failing USB drive.

Do I need to copy any of the other files or folders over?

Also running lspci -d 1000: -vv is now giving me LnkSta: Speed 5GT/s, Width x4 (downgraded) which is better than x1 but seems my motherboard doenst support x8

It should if you use the x16 CPU slot, though x4 it's not bad.

So maybe dumb question but that has GTX 1650 low profile card in the x16 slot I don't use much other than passing through to a Win11 VM... Is it better to swap em and maximise disk speed.

  • Community Expert

I would bet negligible difference in performance on a 1650 in an x4 slot.

Thanks, might swap it over after rebuild has compelted and everything stable.

The rebuild looking much better now

I have a feeling that something went a bit wrong during upgrade to v7.0.0 as previously memory was showing incorrectly and it wouldnt boot after reboot. Got a new USB Drive and transferred licence over and everything starts as it should. Probably had a failing usb drive that had some corruption or something.

Thanks @JorgeB for all the replies too, appriciate it

Swapped over the GFX card with the LSI controller and now showing as

LnkSta: Speed 5GT/s, Width x8

I would 100% prefer faster disk io over the GFX card so hopefully everything will run much better from now. Just need to remember to change the binding for the GPU passthru to VM and should be sorted!
