January 21, 20251 yr So I just added 4 nvme drives to my unraid setup. I'm going to put 3 of them on the cache (which from what I have read should give me some drive parity so i can lose a drive) might add the fourth one but thought about having it as a cold drive so if one died I could just let that one take over without spinning down the machine (it's harder to get to the SSD slots than the hard drives on my rig). 1) I run a few instances of databases and currently put them all to a drive instead of user, so example `/mnt/disk3/appdata/postgresql_matrix` am I suppose to do the same thing for when I use the cache? Set the database to just one cache drive or can I put it in the generic cache place. 2) Same question for appdata, I assume appdata is safe to just set to cache for most application because that's what I'm doing now and don't really have issues. 3) Also I have had issues with minecraft servers and other game servers running them through the user drive instead of a single disk drive. Is that also what I'm suppose to do in a mutli drive cache setup or is it cool to put it on just the cache layer. (I will probably do some testing for the game server as that one is a little easy to test) Thanks for answering any of these questions
January 21, 20251 yr Community Expert Ideally, appdata, domains, and system shares would have all files on a pool and none on the array, so Dockers/VMs will perform better, and so array disks can spin down, since these files are always open. https://docs.unraid.net/unraid-os/manual/shares/user-shares/#default-shares

This will allow you to get maximum speed with minimal wear on the main array. When choosing a configuration, I relied not only on forums, but also on slot reviews in the Australia, which provide very detailed performance analytics. On one of these resources, you can see more information about how different systems respond to loads. Such materials help to better understand which drive should be used for databases and gaming services. This makes the cache configuration more reasonable and accurate.
