Tailscale and Mullvad VPN best practices

Featured Replies

Hey All!

I've been happily using Tailscale plug-in with Mullvad add-on to send dockers' traffic through Mullvad exit node for some time now.

However, with Unraid 7 update's new docker Tailscale integration, things got complicated. I've yet to configure one docker with exit node through Mullvad that actually works for me (but that's my lack of knowledge). But more importantly, even if you do, you need to add each docker as a device to your Mullvad subscription that has 5 devices as standard.

What's the best setup to have some dockers send traffic through Mullvad exit-node (VPN essentially)? Could I have one docker configured as VPN exit node and send traffic through it?

You could still use it as before and you don't have to use the Docker integration.

Exactly, with the Unraid Tailscale Docker Integration this means one Docker container equals one Mullvad device.

That would be of course also be possible but you have to take into account that you then have to use Docker Networking.

Thanks - valid points. I just learned about docker network, will try that.

I am not able to choose exit node from Tailscale plugin through (e.g. to have exit node selected there), it's not visible in UI, neither possible through CLI. Is it working for you on 7?

Last time I‘ve tested it it worked just fine.

Please see this post/tutorial that I‘ve posted:

I am currently using the plugin as I want my Unraid console using an exit node.

Ideally, I would like to use some dockers not using exit nodes or using a different one. Would this be possible?

plugin

Are you Talking about the plugin or the Toggle switch on the Docker template page?

If you are talking about the plugin then this is the correct support thread:

I’m talking about both ;)

I have the plugin running and it works well.

I now like to use the toggle to use a different exit node than used by the plugin. And/or use the toggle not to go through the plugin exit node.

That should be possible in the plugin yes, I described that already here in detail:

Please keep in mind 1 Container = 1 Mullvad VPN

I'm not too familiar with the plugin because I don't want to have my whole Server on the Tailnet, because for me that is a bit of a security risk, however what you are trying to do should be doable as you've already described.

EDIT: @steve1977 after thinking again about that all, if you enable a Exit Node in a Docker container then you are probably routing the traffic twice over Exit Nodes because if you have enabled a Exit Node in the plugin you first route it through that Exit Node and then through the Exit Node from the container <- hope that makes sense to you.
