Possible bug: Circular folders (or links)...

Featured Replies

This luckily has happened only once.

I created a new user share (named PROGRAMS and assigned only on one disk currently).

Then I copied a large folder in it (about 700MB).

All fine and the folder is there.

Only that... INSIDE PROGRAMS folder and next to the actual folder I copied, a new folder exists with the name of my array (!), inside it a folder named programs, inside it a folder with the name of the folder I copied, inside it some other folder that is indeed inside the actual (real) folder (but not the other contents), inside it one more and inside this... AGAIN a folder with the name of my array and so on...

I am a bit scared to delete this before moving the real folder somewhere safe.

I thought I had to report this, maybe something to check before 4.3 release (when is that?)...

Forgot to mention that this is the same both using the share and looking directly in the disk FROM the console.

Also update: I copied the (good) folder and then deleted the circular folders from mc nicely.

Didn't touch the real folder after all.

Still I wonder how this happened.

In the folder you copied to PROGRAMS share, are there any shortcuts (perhaps hidden/system) that point to another share, or anything else suspicious?

Was supposed to be today...  :-\

PROGRAMS is in the root of my disk7 along with a few (+9 in fact) other folders (shares) - nothing else there (just checked with mc too).

INSIDE PROGRAMS now, there was nothing (before), as the folder I copied was the first to actually reside in it.

Of course it was never alone, as after the copy I noticed the parasite folder next to it. :)

Interesting to note that this was the first share I created through the web interface (I didn't actually go IN the disk and create the folder and THEN configure the updated shares page - as I did with all my other shares). On the other hand, nothing happened before I copied the first (and only) folder in it, so maybe it is unrelated to that.

UPDATE!

Happened again with the same folder!!!

(and I deleted the junk again)

Could be related with running the program in the folder I copied?

(that program self updates its folders from the Internet - its WinBuilder, try it yourself - maybe the system is just getting confused with the paths?)

The plot thickens.

I thought that the problem shouldn't be related to the program that "self updates", as the updates would end up in the cache folder.

Right?

So I looked in my cache disk only to find what? That there is no "programs" folder in there at all.

So whatever update takes place (if it does), doesn't go to cache disk at all!

I don't know if this is related to the main problem or not, but I think my next move is an unRAID reboot.

BTW, I forced an "update" so see if this recreates the problem and it didn't.

...and then it showed up.

I'll look into it further, so don't bother.

Running the program from a mapped drive (instead of direct path), solved the issue.

So it is not an unRAID issue (most probably), but rather a problem of the program using such paths.
