Can not make a 10TB drive swap with a 10TB drive. Disk in parity slot is not biggest.

Featured Replies

I had a failing disk and wanted to swap it for a precleared disk but i can not start the array any more. I get this message: Disk in parity slot is not biggest.

This was the failing drive: HUH721010ALE601_7PK4ENXC - 10.0 TB

This is the new drive: ST10000NM0046_ZA265PYW - 10.0 TB

I did the replace data drive procedure step by step.

What am I doing wrong?

You are likely to get better informed feedback if you attach your system’s diagnostics zip file to your next post in this thread. It is always a good idea when asking questions to supply your diagnostics so we can see details of your system, how you have things configured, and the current syslog.

i am guessing that despite the 2 drives nominally having the same size, they are not exactly the same size.   The diagnostics would allow us to confirm this.

If that is the case then you can use the Parity Swap procedure to make the new drive a parity drive and then use the old parity drive to replace an array drive.

I can not install back the failing drive because the server does not boot when it is installed. My question is is it safe to do the parity swap? Also does it work if only one parity drive is bigger afterwards?

Should be no problem doing parity swap as it was designed for exactly your scenario.  There is no requirement that parity drives be the same size as long as they are all at least as large as the biggest data drive.

Thank you for your help! Started the copy process and it will take about 2 days to copy. I don´t understand why it takes so long to copy 10TB but it is good that there is a solution for this problem. After the copy process I can start the array and also the data rebuild should start.
