Upgrade to Unraid 7.0.0, VMS unable to start: Execution error unsupported configuration: locking options are not supported by this virtiofsd

Featured Replies

I just upgraded to Unraid 7.0.0. On 6.12, I had a VMS running just fine with no issues. Now, when I try to start this virtual machine, I get the following error. I have no idea how to fix this, I can't find any posts anywhere about other people having this issue to reference from. Can you all help me?

Execution error

unsupported configuration: locking options are not supported by this virtiofsd

When I go to the VM logs, it just says:
2025-01-28 17:37:11.678+0000: shutting down, reason=failed

Hi there! I had this same issue and I got it to turn the VM on by only having 1 CPU pinned. If anyone knows the rules for cpu core selection for a VM that would be helpful to know. :)

So only having 1 CPU pinned did boot to the VM but then the VM shows "No bootable device". This is for my RetroNas VM that was created with the RetronNAS docker. It worked before I updated to Unraid 7.0.

This is the logs for when I boot the VM:

Same exact issue I had. This is also for my retronas server. To fix it I set Primary vDisk Bus to SATA. Why did this work? I dunno!

Wow, this worked for me. I could not do the initial vm setup and this worked like a charm.  Thanks

I ran into this same error.

The issue was that I had this block to pass a directory through to my VM

<filesystem type='mount' accessmode='passthrough'>
  <driver type='virtiofs' queue='1024'/>
  <binary path='/usr/libexec/virtiofsd' xattr='on'>
    <cache mode='always'/>
    <sandbox mode='chroot'/>
    <lock posix='on' flock='on'/>   <!--  REMOVE THIS LINE -->
  </binary>
  <source dir='/mnt/user/steam/'/>
  <target dir='steam'/>
  <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x01' slot='0x00' function='0x0'/>
</filesystem>

The issue was the `<lock posix='on' flock='on' />` line, which is a legacy way to enable locks that isn't supported anymore. Removing that line allowed the VM to boot up and file locking in that directory still works.
