Building a new UnRaid box, which CPU?

Featured Replies

Good day folks!

I'm building a new server using the 45 Drives HL8 as the base. I plan on using it for Plex (w/ Transcoding), Storage, Minecraft Server, Immich and maybe a couple other things one I start to tinker again.

I was initially looking at the 14600k. It is $309 CAD right now. The 12700k is pretty much the same price and the 12600k is $249 CAD.

Are there issues with the 14th Gen processors or have they all been resolved? Would the 12600k be well more than enough to do what I need or since it's only an extra 60 bucks, would it be better to just get the 14600k?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts and opinions!

How are you planning to transcode?

Using the iGpu on the Intel CPU. I was mostly asking because I heard there were sometimes issues with the 14th Gen chips.. no problem spending the 60 bucks for the better performance Chip, but I don't want to get it if there are going to be issues.

Anyone?

Since the 13th and 14th generation chips have design issues (which apparently have been fixed with microcode) I wouldn't buy one, since there is no guarantee you'll get a good one, or worse, one that has been returned due to issues.

The GPUs in all of them are the same too, although they may have a slightly higher turbo in newer generations, so there is no reason to go for the potentially broken ones, especially since they now have the Core ultra's which won't have the same issue (and a newer GPU but unproven).

Design issue only on top segment cpu and it is related to bios when motherboard sends 1.55V+ for core instead of 1.2-1.3, that's why update microcode helped. And also this issue didn`t affect any CPU, I have 13700KF on my gaming rig with zero issues and all my friends have 13900K and 14900KS with zero issues and only on reddit and from few YouTubers we hear about "design issue".

I suppose it is really hard to at least read little bit about issues instead of listening some forum gossip and YouTubers.

We need more hype
