"SimpleFeatures" - iTunes Server Plugin [SUPPORT]

Recommended Posts

What's the name of your unRAID server? Eg, hostname. If you have any non-alpha characters in your hostname then this could be the cause of Avahi not starting.

Instructions for starting fresh:

Make a backup of your current flash drive contents, then remove existing files and start from fresh with the latest 5.0 Release Candidate. You'll need to re-assign disks to their correct places - this is dangerous if you put a data disk in the position of the parity drive. I will take no responsibility for what happens here, you'll need to do some research on the wiki beforehand if you're not confident with this step.

Install SimpleFeatures Base, and then the iTunes Server Plugin.

Restart, change settings for iTunes Server Plugin and see if it works.

Great success :) I have unraid back up and running, I haven't lost any data and it seems iTunes server is now running.

Only catch is these messages in the log :

Thought I was out of the woods but can't seems to pair the remote, the message I'm getting is

I've created the file on my macbook using text editor and then went through change the extension within the file info, I also thought about it being a permissions issue and tried the permissions script on the webgui both before and while the file was on the library.

I have also tried to change permissions on the file while on my desktop by setting everyone : Read & Write still the same error. Looking at the screen while unraid is running the script I stole the chown users:nobody command and tried to run that on the file before sending to my library but getting " chown: users: Invalid argument "

Any suggestions ?

I've tried but still no luck, I have the code.remote file on my desktop ready to drag and drop into my library. here is a copy from my terminal.

Dwaynes-MacBook:Desktop dwaynemullan$ chown nobody:users code.remote

chown: users: Invalid argument

Dwaynes-MacBook:Desktop dwaynemullan$ sudo chown nobody:users code.remote

chown: users: Invalid argument

Would there be any reason the plugin would fail to stop ? I've clicked no and apply but will not a change to stopped..

Edit : It stopped after a while.

Having no joy with the method you suggested, the log file was getting huge and taking an age to load, Which option should I select to just give the bare essentials ?

Is there any other method I can use to pair my iPhone or iPad ? Its the last hurdle I need to get over and them I'm setup.

Right making progress today with a fresh head. I got both my iPad and iPhone to see the media share but I can only browse my music nothing will play.

To get the remote file to be accepted I done the following :

The text editor in Lion doesn't seem to cut the mustard so I used a text editor called smultron.

I created the file code.remote with just the two lines  - device name & pin, moved it to cache drive, ran chown nobody:users on the .remote file and then used mv command to send it to my music library, remote done.

Here is the log :

Have you changed the output to an airplay speaker ?  Outputting to local will not work since your unraid system does not have sound support...

If you have changed to an airplay speaker and still no sound but the remote works, then you are experiencing the same issue I am :-(

I'm having similar issues too, but I do get sound but only for around 8 seconds and then the sound just stops... the song is still playing it seems because the time is still counting up. If I then pause the song and press play it will give sound for a couple of more seconds, really weird like is buffering or something.

I tried to airplay from an iPhone and iPad to an apple tv and airport express both give the same outcome, I thought maybe the file was too blame, maybe too high a bitrate but I tried .flac .alac .mp3 all the same.

I've just now tried playing a song in iTunes from my macbook but I selected a track under Shared Tower Media which is .flac and air played that to the apple TV and Airport express and it works 100% no breaks in sound. Forked Daapd must be transcoding the audio as iTunes doesn't play .flac files.

There doesn't seem to be a lot more in the .conf file to change so I'm lost.

Righto I've been on a hunt for info and found some guys on the qnap forum with similar problems, only difference is their using qnap kit.

They thought " The problem is that QNAP doesn't enable high resolution timers in their linux kernels for ARM " does this relate to UnRaid ? I don't have the foggiest :) there is other stuff in the thread if someone with a better eye for these things could have a look.

Here is the link if someone else wants to have a look, around halfway down.

  • 2 weeks later...

I've found a work around which does not require the iTunes plugin but does require your iPad to be jailbroken. I was desperate to get a way of playing my music on my unraid from my iPad without having my MacBook on but to also send the output to any AirPlay device.

I mean no insult to speeding_ant and great work he has done.

Now that iPad 3 can be jailbroken, which I was waiting for and delighted to see, fair play to the chaps involved. Get it done ASAP and then move onto the next steps.

1. install XBMC on your ipad - it's a simple but great interface to use I think.

http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=HOW-TO:Install_XBMC_on_iPad/iPhone/iPod_touch

2. Once you've added in your music, movies, tv shares - let it do it's thing to get metadata and such.

3. play any song from your libary and AirPlay to any device via the native ipad way - double click the home button, scroll to the left where you have AirPlay button, click it and select your output device.

Tested on both an Apple TV 3 & Airport Express (connected to amp via optical)

Well...

Sorry to say but that is not really a solution and this also allready worked with the speeding_ant version..

What you are doing with XBMC on your ipad is replacing the ipad's itunes with XBMC and then accessing the itunes library with xbmc (instead of with itunes) and then playing the audio from your ipad to an airplay speaker.

This allready works (at least for me and some other users) with this itunes server plugin.

Problem is that the unraid system is not playing the music, the iDevice (iphone, ipad or ipod touch) is playing the music and then sending it to the airplay device.

What the itunes plugin is able to do according to specs is using the iDevice as a remote and then having the unraid play the music and sending it to the airplay speakers.

The first needs an iDevice to be allways on streaming music (and using battery) while the latter just uses the iDevice as a remote and after starting playing the unraid system takes care of everything..

I have played around with XBMC on my ipad but personally I think it is a very heavy program for an iDevice.. with iTunes and Airvideo I can do all I need to..

I see what ya mean Helmonder, I did say it was a work around  :-\

I would ideally love the iTunes server up and running and for that to play the music but at this time it seems not to want to play ball and with my lack of experience and google at my finger tips, I can't find a solution.

I did post a link from a qnap site with people suffering similar issues, I don't know how this translates to unriad though.

The only reason I posted was just to say here is another way to do things if your stuck and want a stop gap, you dont even need to touch unraid just install xbmc on your iPad and point to your music.

I'll be keeping an eye out for any progress as I said this is something I really do like.
