My Parity 2 and Disk 1 drives were disabled.  Drives show healthy on dashboard.

 

I have stopped the array and rebooted.  Restarted array and both Parity 2 and Disk 1 continue to be disabled.  I ran a Smart short test on both drives and they come back no errors and healthy.  Disk 1 says Unmountable: Unsupported or no file system.  I'm extremely concerned and don't want to loose data.  Just prior to these errors happening I was messing with VM setup and bailed out of the edit->update process.  It was taking a long time.

Check filesystem on disk1 from the webUI, capture the output and post it.

OK.  I ran check filesystem in maintenance mode with -n.  Test has been running for a while and still shows running.  Here are the results so far.  I'm not sure if the test is hung.

Did you do that from the webUI, not the command line? Easy to get the command wrong, webUI will get it right.

 

If it doesn't work we can unassign the physical disk and see if it will mount as Unasssigned.

If data is still present will I loose it when I unassign?  Check Filesystem still shows running with no change. 

Disk1 will still be emulated by parity if the physical disk is unassigned. The emulated disk is unmountable so we are doing check filesystem on it.

 

Possibly physical disk would be mountable, or if not, check filesystem could be done on it.

 

Probably a good idea to try that approach anyway since emulated check filesystem may not produce the best result (if any).

If you unassign disk1, the physical disk should appear as an Unassigned Device and it might even be mountable without needing to check filesystem on it.

 

You should update your Unassigned Devices plugin (some others have updates too).

I unassigned Disk1.  I was able to mount the file system with the array stopped, probably doesn't matter, just providing details.  Now what?

You can New Config it back in to the array and rebuild both parity.

 

Unmount the Unassigned

 

Tools - New Config - Retain all - Apply

 

Reassign disk1 and start the array to begin parity rebuild (don't check Parity valid box)

OK I added it back to the array.

 

Is this correct?  I don't see the Parity valid box that is to be left unchecked.

After you Apply, you have to reassign disk1. The parity valid box will be next to the Start button, don't check it.

OK.  Dumb question. I assigned it here though in the previous step. Should I remove it then preserve current assignments - all/apply and then add the drive back to disk1?  Sorry.  I just want to make sure I get the exact steps right.

If the assignments are correct you can start the array. I just didn't think it would remember the disk1 assignment since you hadn't started the array after reassigning it.

You can leave it assigned, just do the new config now, all disk icons must turn blue.

That is correct.

 

After you click Apply, you will go back to the Main page where you can reassign your disks as needed before starting the array to begin parity rebuild.

 

Don't be surprised if it doesn't remember you had reassigned disk1 since it doesn't actually record that until you start the array.

Not erased, overwritten with parity calculated from the disks currently in the array.

 

This is exactly what you want. The disabled disk was out-of-sync with the array. Since we didn't rebuild it, we have to rebuild parity instead.
