February 6, 20251 yr I am having an issue as I migrate files from my old unraid server to a new one. As I transfer files from the old server to an External HDD using Unraid's inbuilt file manager, speeds start somewhere between 20-30 MB/s (which seems to be the average on this server historically), and then over time, dwindle to 10, 5, 4 MB/s the more files are transferred. Has anyone ever experienced this or have a fix? Thanks!
February 6, 20251 yr Community Expert There is some "housekeeping" (maintaining directories, etc.) for each file transferred, so if there are a lot of small files it will be noticeably slower than transferring a few large files. You can often see it speed up when transferring a large file, and slow down when transferring a lot of small files. Also, Move will be slower than Copy, because Move has to copy from source to destination, which can be as fast as the single disk can be read, but then it has to delete from the source, which is a write operation that has to get parity updates involved. Also, Copy instead of Move will leave the original files where they were as a backup until you are satisfied that you have them all transferred. And you still need a backup of anything important and irreplaceable. Parity is not a substitute for backup.
