Noob Questions and Maybe Bugs Time Stamp Off and Lag during boot

Featured Replies

Howdy, I'm using the free version of Unraid until I can make sure it does what I need. So far it's awesome. I just have a few questions I'm not sure where to post but I'm using the latest beta version so I thought this might be the right spot.

It boots fine but takes a few minutes and it lags during boot for 30 seconds on this line:

Triggering udev events: /sbin/udevtrigger --retry failed--

Just want to make sure the system is stable before deleting HDD and putting them into the array.

Next question when I spin down and then power down the screen says, "system halted" and the light on the USB Flash turns off but the computer, fans and power light, stay on. Is that normal or should Unraid be turning off the computer completely when I do a power down?

My system BIOS time is correct, but in http://tower the time is not correct, the GMT is set correctly for San Francisco -8:00 but it's like 7 hours off. When I change this it changed my BIOS time to be incorrect. When I changed the BIOS time back it changed the programs time to being off? Any suggestions.

Last question when I'm in the boot screen of my system BIOS for my MOBO it has my USB San Disk Flash Drive listed twice, is that a problem. The one I selected seems to work but as I had trouble formatting it I want to make sure I don't have any errors.

What motherboard are you using?  It seems that unRAID is powering down correctly, but there's an issue with it and your motherboard as far as the system not completely powering down.

unRAID keeps time based off of GMT, so yes it's going to be off when you check the Bios.  Basically, it sets the clock to GMT, then when it displays the time it subtracts (or adds) the correct number of hours for your timezone.

Your flash drive is probably listed twice because the system is seeing it twice.  You probably need to remove the U3 software, then reformat.  Here's a link to download the U3 remover:

It is a bit confusing to set the time zone... since the setting on the unRAID server is relative to the server rather than GMT.  In other words, use GMT+7 if you normally are used to setting GMT-7.  Or, you can follow the instructions in the documentation and download and install in your config folder the timezone file for your timezone and then select it as "custom" in the web-management page.  Instructions here: http://lime-technology.com/?page_id=47#toc-date-and-time

This is a bit long but all systems pause there for several seconds.  "--retry failed-" is just a switch being passed into the udevtrigger program, it does not mean anything has failed.

Sounds like bios Power Management is not set up correctly or is buggy on your m/b.

The time stored in the real-time-clock chip on your motherboard is set to GMT for linux systems and Local Time for Windows systems.  You are probably used to seeing it set to Local Time.  When you set the time via unRAID Management Utility, it will set this to GMT.

Definitely buggy m/b bios.  Probably not a problem though if it boots reliably.

If the flash disk has the U3 software installed, it will show up as two drives.  In Windows, one will tend to show up as a cd-rom device, the other as a regular usb hard drive.  Removing the U3 software is a good idea.  I had a flash disk that had similar software installed (but the U3 remover wouldn't recognize it) and I never could get it to boot unRAID correctly.  My motherboard bios also saw it as two devices.  Unfortunately it wouldn't boot correctly so I had to buy another flash disk (one that I could remove the U3 software from).

Thanks for the quick response as I'm trying to get this thing Running.

My computer parts are: ECS Mobo P4M800Pro-M, Celeron 2.53, onboard video and NIC and 2 GB of Ram, Rosewill Sata and IDE PCI Card RC-212

Tom, should I do as they instructed above and erase the flash drive an reinstall Unraid? I'm using basic so far so I don't have a key on it?

I don't care if the time is off, if I leave it will if affect anything.

Should I turn off power managment in the bios? RE: I did this and will see how it affects it.

Now the big problem, it won't seem to work on my Tvix M4000P. I normally use NFS through another server. So now my Unraid is working and I have ISO files on it within other folders that have Icons for Tvix to display. I have the Tvix now set for Samba with it pointing to the user share I created "TvixHD1". For the user share I have it set to Split 0, as I don't understand the differences. I can browse the icons on my Tvix like I normally do and I was able to play one movie and fast forward through it "bourn ultimatum". I went to try another movie as Bourne is a little grainy, which is probably the way they filmed it, and it doesn't play. It says play on the screen then nothing I can hit a few buttons and the command, fast forward, display on the tv but nothing happens. Then the tvix won't respond to any command except power off. I know the tvix is not at fault as I can restart it and point to my old server using NFS and play the exact same movie and it works. What do you think the problem is? I can't even play the one movie I did get to play briefly. I can still browse the icons and hit play but the screen goes black and the time indicator on the Tvix won't advance. After powering down a few times, both unraid and tvix, I got it to play an intro on a dvd then when it went to go to menu it froze again.

I used the erase tool from san disk and reformated with 4.2.4 which in not a beta version. It booted fine and the double entry of the san disk in the mobo bios is gone. It is now resyncing, which I hope is normal and it's not going to redo the entire array. I will try the streaming once the parity is back up.

Turns out it's probably not my new UnRaid Server but my Samba. I left netshare enabled on my old server, which is windows XP, then tried to watch a movie via NFS, everything works fine. Then I change the settings on my Tvix ONLY to samba and I can scroll through the movies and click on them to play but same thing happens it locks up. Oh I forgot to mention I was on Firmware 2.2.0 for Model M4000P, I upgraded now to 2.2.7 and tried what I did about and same thing nothing. After I power down I can play the beginning of one movie but can't fast forward or goto DVD menu or anything except power or stop. When I press stop it goes back to the videos and if I click on the same movie I tried to watch it goes black and then returns to the video list. Plus it starts at the wrong point in the dvd? Weird and when I press menu it turned on the subtitles but wouldn't turn them off. So I'm confused.

Any help? I start looking at post with problem of tvix using samba.

I have some progress. Turns out Tvix 4000 doesn't like ISO files over samba. Plus I was able to mount a drive on my Windows Server and then direct my Tvix Netshare to that folder. So I was able to get my iso files to play through my new unraid server through a window computer using netshare to my tvix. A round about way but I've got 2 options now on how to use it. I will be calling Tvix Tech support at Digital connection tomorrow and see if there is a work around to the samba iso problem.
