How to upgrade to a new server

Featured Replies

Hi all.

I am building a new server with new drives and motherboard.

So i want to get everything setup on a new USB drive with a trial key and transfer all my data over from the old server. Once done, is there a way to transfer my old USB key to the new server USB drive?

thanks.

See if this answers your questions:

       https://docs.unraid.net/unraid-os/faq/licensing-faq/#how-do-i-manually-install-my-license-keyfile-to-my-usb-flash

Then this, starting with step 4:

      https://docs.unraid.net/unraid-os/manual/changing-the-flash-device/#manual-method

Basically, you copy the .key file from the older server's USB drive to the new server's USB drive.  Observe that there can only be one .key file in the new server's USB's /config folder.   You then transfer the license to the new USB drive.  (The old license and its associated USB drive will now be blacklisted.)

You might be better of copying the ‘config’ folder from the trial flash drive on the new server overwriting the ‘config’ folder on the old flash drive (but keep the .key licence file in place).    This will transfer the settings across.   You can then boot the new server off that and avoid the need to do a licence transfer as it is tied to the flash drive GUID.

I will go ahead and try this method. All parts are in so the new build is starting! I will post back and let all know how it went.

Just make sure you make a backup of either flash drive (all you need is the 'config' folder) before making changes so that you can easily revert to the current position if needed.  Not much effort and protects you against accidentally doing any of the copying wrong.

This worked fine. Thanks.
