Confusion. Transferring to new server and changing/adding drives around.

Featured Replies

Current setup is:

1 ssd = cache drive

0 parity

1 4TB

1 512gb

1 1TB

New server I will be adding 2 3TB drives and I'd like to make my 4TB a parity. I have read through some of the documentation and i know this can be done but i'm freaked out with possibly losing all my data on my current array. I have several dockers/apps, 1 VM, and about 2TB of media for plex. What would be the cleanest way to do tihs? I've read about how to transfer the unraid USB to another PC tower and do the New Config but with the changing around of the drives i think it makes the project more confusing. And once i get all the drives into the new tower what would the best array option be for me? I'm so new to this, obviously, and hate to be "that guy" but i'm just looking for some guidance that's not in a document. Thanks in advance.

Can you add one of the 3TB to your current setup? Then you could use Unbalanced plugin to empty the 4TB

yeah i have an extra bay i can do that. So transfer all data to the 3TB as a drive that's not in the array, move the 4tb to the new server and create it as a parity. but then i have data on one of my 3TB's that i'll need to join to the new array on the new server?

Just go ahead and add the 3TB to the array. You will have to New Config after you empty the 4TB so it can be reassigned as parity. You could do that before or after moving to the new server.

ahh ok i was under the impression when you add a drive to the array it formats and wipes it.

Do you mean the 3TBs that you want to add already have data on them?

  • Author

nah they're blank. but you said move all the data off my 4tb to one of those. so one of those will have the data from the 4tb. when i join the 3tb's to the array, won't it wipe them?

I think Unbalanced only works with array drives.

ohhhhh duh, i'm an idiot. of course. migrate current setup to new server, join the 3tb's to the array, then unbalance the data over then make the 4tb a parity. SOLID. Thank you!
