February 16, 20251 yr Can't get past post with a raid card in. I have a Adaptec Smartraid 3154-16I, 81605ZQ, 9260 (not near system) and a h755 that I've put in a number of systems with no issues. i just got a new tomahawk motherboard that has the 7e51v1a24 firmware in it. I've tried a number of combinations in the 3 slots. If I put the card in the first slot - the onboard graphics is disabled and the system won't post. If I put a cheap 1GB old PCIE video card in the first slot and any card mentioned above in the 2nd or 3rd slot - it continuously reboots never getting past post and the usb ports are ALL disabled. I've reset the bios many times, I've tried many combinations within the bios - none of them have worked. All of my cards work great on older systems and are in use. This is my first AMD processor since my 386-40. I don't know if the problem is MSI's bios or the x870 chipset or even the AMD processor. Anyone here have experience with an x870 processor and a raid card?
February 16, 20251 yr RAID controllers are normally not recommended, but the adaptec ones should be okay because they can pass-through non-RAID drives. The Adaptec Smartraid 3154-16I got new firmware two months ago, so make sure that is installed. If it still doesn't work, try contacting Adaptec, to see if it is a known problem. Unfortunately the site doesn't seem to work properly, so I can't download the firmware or release notes to see if it is something they fixed.

Thanks - I tried the latest MSI bios and the latest adaptec and LSI firmware - work fine in older systems just not in my MSI x870.

In the old days, you'd get a nice book with the motherboard were they had things like 'does not work with this device, or set this for that device' but these days they don't seem to test much anymore. So since it's a pretty new board, I'd contact MSI, they also have forums, Being a gaming-board, they probably never tested server-stuff for compatibility, so you need to get them to figure out what the issue is.
February 24, 20251 yr Author I spent a LOT of hours trying out every CMOS config and bios version I could find. After nearly 16 hours of different options, I got an email from MSI - they said they haven't heard anything about issues so the problem is on my end. I switched the motherboard with one from another manufacturer and the albatross of MSI is gone - never ever ever ever ever again. Even if by chance I got a defective motherboard their concern and effort and quick reply after 2 weeks was enough to convince me of where the issue is.
