April 19, 201214 yr Since I mostly used Intel processors myself, I need some clarification please. A nephew of mine is just starting with building his own PC and wants to build both a desktop and Unraid server. And he wants to go the AMD route. I see many MB and processors, but what MB/processor is best suited for an unraid server, and what is best suited for a Gaming PC (Dual ATI or Nvidia video-setup)? Sempron, FX, A8. Dual, Quad, 6 or 8-core? MB-chipsets? The Unraid server will probably start with a total of 6 disks and my grow to 10-12 disks, with SABNZB and streaming-software to iPAD and IPhone (Plex or Airvideo). What PSU's are suited for the desktop and server?
April 19, 201214 yr Well lets split this into to parts. For a Unraid server you can go AMD or Intel without a loss in performance. AMD is usually cheaper and you can get a cpu and a mobo off of the tested Wiki for cheap. I belive Raj has a very nice website giving detail on system specs and different mobo and cpu setups. For a gaming PC all depends on how much you are willing to spend. AMD and Intel both have a great line up for performance on the gaming end. I have a unlocked 6 core AMD cpu OC'd at 3.8ghz and a ati video card being powered by a 650 watt psu. It does what I ask from it and play FSX and X plane very well. Like I said it all depends on the money you want to spend and the use you are looking to get out of the rig.
April 19, 201214 yr Author What 6 core CPU were you talking about? Is it a true 6core? Or a 3core with HT? Also which MB?
April 19, 201214 yr It is a zosma 4 core http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103995&Tpk=zosma and a reused MSI 880 GMA E 45 mobo originally used as my primary UNRAID server.
