External Drives Added to Array?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I always thought it was impossible to add an external drive (USB) to an array but now I'm seeing that it is possible but not recommended. Other than performance concerns, are there additional concerns about adding an external to an array?

Thanks!

Assuming you mean connecting by USB then the biggest issue is when connected that way is not performance but the fact that drives can drop offline temporarily, and Unraid cannot handle that tidily for drives in the main array so you tend to get drives being disabled unexpectedly.   This means they then need rebuilding to get them accepted back into the array.

Having said that some users seem to use USB connected drives successfully in the main array.

Normally the best way to handle USB connected drives is via the Unassigned Devices (UD) plugin as that CAN handle the temporary disconnects mentioned above.

Gotcha. This makes sense. I was hoping to get the benefit of the parity drive with my externals but that seems unwise with this information.
