Please Review My unRAID build

Featured Replies

Hey there!

I was wondering if I could have the wise folks here at unRAID forums look over my build: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/TheGreenWizard2007/saved/xCjgzy

A few notes:

  1. What is in the parts list is what I'm hoping to get.
  2. I'm getting this MicroCenter Bundle: Intel Core i7-12700K, MSI Z790-P Pro WiFi DDR4, Crucial 16GB DDR4-3200 Kit, Computer Build Bundle which is for $279.99.
  3. The WD Red and Seagate IronWolf NAS drives and the Crucial SSD drive are what I currently have in my unRAID build, and I'll be transferring them over. They are included in the pcpartslist to estimate power consumption.
  4. The Graphics card is a hand me down from my Brother in law, and I know that the Intel chip has integrated Graphics.
  5. Trying to future proof as much as possible, so if something seems overkill... keep in mind that my current unRAID build is made with stuff from circa 2015-2017, and the equipment is showing its age.
  6. Ignore the corny name - it's my creative solution to our current ... naming debate (he's a Star Wars fan, I'm a Trekkie and I figured the only thing in common was "Star").

Looking for general advice, and suggestions on how to improve this build, given that my budget is around $700 as of right now. I know that in the future I'll be able to upgrade the HDDs to larger capacities.

What am I using it for: media server; home automation; immich; nextcloud; and other projects that will come up in the future.

Thank you in advance!

If you want to use the WD-Red's in a ZFS-POOL, make sure they are CMR and not SMR, because ZFS is eating SMR_drives🫥.  Both versions on the market.

Thanks for letting me know - I was not aware of this. Hopefully they are CMR...

Hey all -

My apologies - I forgot to make the list public. I have done so now. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

It looks like that mobo supports 4 NVMe cards which is nice but you only have 2 NVMe in your parts list.  Maybe upgrade for later?

The CPU and board look good.  Intel LAN (2.5Gbps).  Supports virtualization.  Has three PCIe x16 slots.  Supports 128GB RAM but has only 16GB.  Not that this bad, it's ok.  I think that 32GB would be nicer but you can always upgrade if you see the need.  My servers all have 64GB and that's overkill.  I have Jellyfin, Plex, Syncthing, and a few others including a VM running and my memory load is about 9GB.

All in all, it looks good.
