April 22, 201214 yr Hello, I'm looking to build a NAS. I do not require much storage (right now I have only about 2TB, but would like to have the option to store more than that for the future). I want it to be compatible with xbmc, sick beard, sabnzbd, etc. I would also like the NAS to be cheap ($250 or less would be ideal). The main reasons I want a NAS is to be able to access my media through my network. After some research, I think I have decided unraid is the best solution for me. I was going to go to frys today and ask the people there for help picking out the parts for this but decided I would look online for some recommended builds. I know little about computer components but did build my own HTPC. I am really not comfortable choosing the parts myself as I know I am really not qualified. What I'm really looking for is for someone else to just tell me what to get. I think that the budge unraid build (http://unraid.me/buy/) looks good and in the right price range for me (since I don't have a lot of data, I don't want to spend a lot of money). However, I have not been able to find that mobo. My questions, then, are: 1. What other mobo is compatible with the other components and also unraid 2. Will this build do what I am looking for Thanks!

April 23, 201214 yr IIRC, most of the boards on the compatibility list are older. It is not on the list, having said that, there are several threads with users that have that board. In a couple weeks I guess I'll probably be able to report on compatibility.

Also, would sabnzbd, sick beard, xbmc, etc work with this? The compatibility list is really old and outdated. Probably 90% of the mobo's listed are discontinued already. I got my mobo on ebay, and I was lucky to find it brand new. You should check Greenleaf Technologies website, and see their recommended builds, which are newer, but some of the recommended mobo's have been discontinued already.

I wanted to max out my server to 8gb, but it will cost me over $100 dollars to do that. I looked at the greenleaf tech website and it looks like the 3-9 drive prototypes seem more suited for me (as I never plan to exceed that). April 24, 201214 yr Yeah, look for a different PSU. That one may be single rail but it is HORRIBLY inefficient. The specs show it is 480W with 16Amp on the +12V rail. By comparison the 500W corsair is single rail and has 34Amp on the +12 volt rail. Don't skimp on the PSU it is quite possibly the most important part especially as you start adding more drives.
April 24, 201214 yr +1 for better PSU As a technician by trade I can tell you that cheap power supplies are nasty. Any brand name PSU should be fine for your budget (Thermaltake, Corsair, Antec) but look for something where the tech specs list a single 12V rail as this is the most important thing to look for when you start running more drives. Corsair PSU's are very popular on the unRAID forums, if you arent planning on going over 10 drives then something in the 450-500W range will be plenty. If you're going to splurge on the build at all the PSU would be the best place for it :-)

April 25, 201214 yr Everything there should work just fine together, that case is nice but a little limiting in drive mounting spaces; otherwise fine though. How many drives are you planning on building up to in this system? That case would comfortably hold ~9-10 drives before things started to get pretty tricky and then heat may also become an issue (under load).
