How to cleanly setup a ZFS Raidz ? (Unraid 7)

Featured Replies

Hello,

I have bought a LincStation N1 and been messing around with it.

Now I just want to set it up as being my personal server for important files and pictures.

I want to do a Raidz2 with 4 SSDs NVME.

I am in the latest Unraid OS 7 installed.

I have some experience with Linux but not much with Unraid or similar. So I wanted to know if there was some 'best practice' in order to setup a Raidz or really if there is just any up to date tutorial (I have googled but everything seems to be outdated to before unraid 7).

- I need to be able to replace a failing SSD smoothly

- The setup needs to be done so that I don't have to touch it anymore afterwards (I won't resize or do anything like that)

- It needs to be reliable (which is why I want to go with Raidz2)

BTW, do I need to do anything with the SSDs beforehand given that they were setup with unraid before to try it out ? I already reinstalled unraid on the flash drive. Do I need to format them in any way or are they gonna be automatically wiped and ready ?

Basically, you just need to add a new pool:

Add pool

choose the name and number of devices

assign all devices

click on the first pool device and if they are not wiped, click "erase pool"

ten choose zfs and raidz2 (p.s. it may make more sense creating striped mirrors than a 4 device raidz2)

start array, format the pool.

Exactly what I was looking for

Thank you very much that's very helpful

I am stuck with this error message: "Unmountable: wrong or no file system"

I clicked on 'Format' with the GUI

I tried to stop and start again the array and clicking again on format

I tried to restart the server and click again on format

But the error message keeps popping back

EDIT: it seems like that it works after having done a SHUTDOWN and then manually starting the server again instead of the restart. I did format again and now the pool is working properly

You are likely to get more informed feedback if you attach your system's diagnostics zip file to your next post in this thread taken after a format attempt.
It is always a good idea to do this to allow us to see the current state of your system and so we can see logs.

That's typically not needed, but sometimes it can be, especially with NVMe devices, they report "busy", and a reboot is needed.
