Installing software on windows client from Unraid Shares / Performance when using files on Unraid shares

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I have some .exe files for software packages saved in a share on my Unraid server that I want to install on my windows pc.

In some cases when I double-click an .exe file it'll run and let me install the software, but the majority of the time nothing happens when double-clicking the file. If I then copy the file to a local disk on the windows pc, I can install it.

Is this expected behavior? Why would some .exe's work and not others?

And more generally, what are the limitations of files stored on the server rather than on the local disk? Should they behave in the same way? Can Unraid network shares be considered as local disk extension? What about performance for example when using files stored on the server for things such as audio and video editing software running on windows? Should / could I expect the performance to be as good as files stored locally?

Thanks,

I'd probably just chalk it up to the installer not wanting to be installed from a network share.
