March 21, 20251 yr My unraid is unfortunately on a USB stick attached to USB 2.0. I bought an SSD and I want to reinstall UNRAID there. I do not know if I will lose all my data on my HD's or whether UNRAID will somehow check that I have data on my HD's and basically just restore the main OS (unraid) and intelligently restore my server with all data. I paid pro for the USB (Registered USB Flash GUID) but if re-install unraid then I am changing hardware and pro will be disabled. My unraid config is just cluttered with multiple configs over the years and I would like a fresh start with 7.0.1. However, I do not know if I can just tell the new install: 'here... use these 2 disks as parity and the rest as my data.. oh .. and use this NVME as cache'. any input would be appreciated.
March 21, 20251 yr Community Expert Unraid is not “installed’ in the traditional sense, and it has to be booted and run from the USB stick for which it is licenced, The fact your USB stick is USB 2 is not an issue as after initial load at boot time Unraid runs from RAM and the USB stick is very lightly used. In fact we normally recommend USB 2 as being more reliable than USB 3.
March 21, 20251 yr Author If USB stick is the norm then so be it. What tool, system config or other would allow me to cleanly install 7.0.1? I've been upgrading for several years now and the accumulation of deprecated installs is clearly cluttered on my end. I would prefer to keep my data.
