Nvidia 5080 issue with Unraid

Featured Replies

Hello all, I'm having a problem with a new graphics card not displaying anything (black screen) when passing through to my VM. This system has been set up for some time and I'm currently using an EVGA nVidia 3080 FTW that works perfectly fine. I just purchased a Gigabyte Nvidia AERO 5080.

After slotting the new card in the same spot the other one was (not in the primary slot, but the only GPU in the system). I first ran SpaceInvaderOnes script to dump the VBIOS which it did without a hiccup using the Linux VM method and it didn't put it to sleep. The VBIOS look good and it looks like that worked properly.

I went to the VM and assigned the 5080 and the audio but when I boot the VM the screen comes on, but it just stays black. It seems that the outputs must be working as the screen comes out of a sleep state.

I made sure the GPU was good by downloading the nVidia version of Nobara Linux and booted it from a USB. Everything was fine and was getting my 4k display with 240hz and even ran glxgears to make sure OpenGL was working.

I also created a new VM with the same nVidia version of Nobara Linux and started it and the same issue remains. The screen comes on and then stays black.

It seems to be an Unraid issue in some manner as when I boot unraid with this card in, it goes to the boot menu, I hit enter, it starts booting, then the screen just stays in the state it was in. The boot menu is there and I see it starting to unpack the kernel, then those messages stay (along with the boot menu) and never updates again (unless I start a VM that blacks the screen).

There is nothing in the logs of substance. The exact messages happen for that PCI device as they do with the 3080 so I don't know where to go from here.

Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Here is the log of when I was starting and stopping the VM a few times, but again nothing interesting.

Does anyone have any idea why when I boot with the:

3080 (first image) I get the text output of the boot process and can interact with the command line after boot (this is expected)

5080 (second image) is installed I see the text for only the first few lines of boot and it stays that way on the screen boot a vm using that GPU (will be black screen)?

I can't help but think that the two issues are related. How can I get Unraid to actually display the text when booting? Do I have to install the GPU drivers on Unraid (never had to do this on any other card)?

I have installed this GPU in a separate computer with Windows installed and a computer with Linux installed (with nvidia drivers). The GPU is fine.

I tried installing this is the primary GPU slot in my the Unraid server I'm trying to get this to work on.

Every time I put the 3080 back in, everything just works.

Can someone from the support team please help?

Would upgrading to Unraid 7.1 from 7.0.1 help with this issue any (newer kernel)? I don't know if there has to be kernel support for the cards.

Assuming you have the Nvidia driver plugin installed, the 5080 may not be correctly supported/initialized, if that is correct, I would recommend asking for help in the Nvidia plugin support thread.

I figured it out. Went through all the bios settings and changed the Link Mode on the PCIe slot to Gen 4.

Which 5080 do you have? I have the PNY one and can't seem to get anywhere with it.

Was that with a windows VM?

I spent my entire trial period trying to get it to work with no success. I can't justify buying unraid when it's my primary goal to setup this threadripper with multiple 5k series cards for my household.
