[SOLVED] RAID Card / BIOS Problem? No boot on MD-1510/LI Server

Featured Replies

Hi all -

Need some input from the gurus here.

I have twin MD-1510/LI Servers - one as a primary, one as a backup - built by Lime Tech here - running 5.0 beta 13.

I have a real weird hardware fault that I'm going in circles here with on my backup machine. I've troubleshooted it down to this:

The last 4 upper slots in the units (it has 15 slots in 3 RAID cages) - whenever I put any drive in there, the server will not boot, regardless of brand. After a RAID card/BIOS/Spin Up check, it just sits there - just before it loads UNRAID. Little blinking underscore cursor...

If there are no drives in those last 4 slots - it boots normally - UNRAID is happy - it goes along its merry way.

I have a mix of Barracudas and Caviars - all running well in both servers. I've replaced cables, the Icy Box RAID cage, and the RAID card in this server. It still doesn't like a drive in those last 4 slots.

Ideas? What am I missing?

Examine the card BIOS. It's trying to boot from the new drive.

Interesting. You might be on to something there.

In the BIOS - it has the USB Firefly as the 1st Boot Device, and the first slot parity drive as the second device to boot from.

If I disable the second boot device - it comes up with a message 'Reboot and Select proper boot device'. Stops.

If I interrupt the sequence with an F11, and tell it to boot from the USB Key, same message.

The USB Key is on the motherboard internally.

:)

OKAY! I found it. Thanks for the help. I got it to boot.

So in the Marvell BIOS Setup > Controller > Controller Config

There's a menu called 'INT 13h' (pretty cryptic huh?)

Set that to 'Disable' and it turns the controller into a data device, rather than a boot device....

If you were in the room, I would hug you.

Thanks for the great help!
