VM halting and black screen when using GPU Passthrough - Only works when rebinding graphics card

Featured Replies

All was working fine in Unraid 6. Now using Unraid 7.0.1

I have come across this issue that my VMs will not work when I enable GPU passthrough. When I try to start the VM the screen is black and the system resources meter on the top of the screen shows no reads or writes even though the VM shows as started.

When I run the same VM however with the VNC as the display the system seems to boot up fine.

Now for the strange part - I can create the VM and setup the OS with VNC. I then go to system devices and unbind my RTX3090 then reboot. I allow the system to reboot then I bind the RTX3090, reboot and the VM works fine.

Essentially the VM GPU passthrough only works when unbinding and rebinding the GPU.

Any thoughts on why I am seeing this problem? I am having to do this every time I install a new VM and want to utilize GPU passthrough. I have attached my diagnostics file but I am currently in a state where my VM is working as expected.
