New guy...Next step?

Featured Replies

Hi guys.

I just found this site and have a few questions. First some background.

I just got a new Panasonic plasma TV. We have an older 42" TV downstairs with a Tivo. I got thinking how I could play my Tivo shows on the new TV too. That got me to MythTV where I read about unRAID. Which got me to Apple TV (I just bought a ATV 2 JB tonight). In the mean time I updated our Mac's to Lion and now my Linkstation doesn't work, but it is like 5-6 years old and I have been thinking about replacing it. We use USB drives and Time Machine to backup our Mac's (3 in the house) and the drives are just too small now.

So I am thinking of building a unRAID. I have old hardware around but might just buy new. Budget build. Here is what I am looking to do.

Replace the Linkstation NAS.

Have a place for Time Machine to back up to.

Storage for movies and TV shows.

Backup storage for Lightroom photo’s/Catalogs.

Since I am new to the home theater media center thing I’m not sure what the best setup would be. I am not a big movie person but my wife and daughter rent a lot of DVD’s. I am going to JB the ATV and install XBMC to see what it can do.

I would like to get rid of Tivo, and if I could cable TV. Am I on the right track? I have been reading so much info that I’m not sure what is the best way to go.
