Intel X710-DA4 FH PCIe 10Gb 4-Port SFP+ - A refreshing experience

Featured Replies

I don't know about guy guys (and gals), but I'm a sucker for ordering used SFP+ NICs for my servers.

Being an Aussie, most affordable used NICs are either really old or modified in such ways that you're not even sure if the product is genuine or not (typically from aliexpress). This is particularly true for the beloved Mellanox Connect X-3s that have served me well over the years, where they will work, but you simply don't even bother looking into updating the firmware - not that there have been any firmware updates since ancient times.

Lately, I've seen a few Intel X710-DA4 FHs pop up on ebay for reasonable prices ($110-120AUD), and I took a chance. I was happy with the Connect X-3s 10G (my Mikrotik Switches are 10G), but was in the market for a 4 port card. The card arrived with a manufacture date of 2019, and all the right Intel stickers and markings. I plugged it into a Windows 11 machine and the card was detected right away and the firmware updated without a hitch. Have tested it with UnRaid and Proxmox and everything is working as expected. Card doesn't run too hot and I haven't had to add a fan or anything like that.

So yeah, it has been a refreshing and enjoyable experience with this card so far. Have just ordered a second one for another machine.
