Email notifications not working

Featured Replies

For the life of me I can't get the ssmtp working properly.  I have installed the ssmtp package, but it says "Installed but current version is different. Current version="expected '2.62'"

Forward "Root" email: [email protected]

email server: outgoing.verizon.net:465

Use TLS?(YES/NO): YES

Mail ID: MyEmailAddress

Mail Password: MyPassword

Mail Domain: localhost

From Line Override: YES

Re-Write Domain:

RevAlias:

Then I open putty and telnet to the server and type this command

echo -e "Subject: a test\n\nThis is the email body." | ssmtp -d root

When I hit enter, I just get returned to the prompt.  There also isn't anything added to the Syslog other than a line about user 'root' logged in.

Any thoughts?

Hi mbryanr.  I changed the values as instructed in your second link and it still didn't send.  I also tried using my GoDaddy email address associated with the domain I own and used my domain name in the section where it says "Mail Domain" and that didn't work either.

I also tried using my gmail address and it still didn't work.  I am now out of email address to try.  :-\

The first link confused me since the one poster said they had updated the link to include the new version and that using the "Check for updates" should download the newest version.  I can't seem to find a "Check for updates" button anywhere in unMenu?

Check under "user scripts" assuming you are using 4.7

Setting up gmail should look like this...

Spaces and # etc may fark up ssmtp

Forward "root" email to:   [[email protected]]   Enter the e-mail account where mail to root will be forwarded.
E-Mail Server:[smtp.gmail.com:25]   Mail Server Address used to send e-mail.
Use TLS?(YES/NO):   [YES]   If using a secure connection to the mail-server, set this to YES.
Mail ID:[[email protected]]      Your e-mail account on the mail server. (just the ID without the @server.com) Needed if your mail server requires authorization, leave blank otherwise.
Mail Password:[mygmail password]      The e-mail password used when SENDING e-mail. (sometimes different than the one used to read mail) Needed if your mail server requires authorization, leave blank otherwise.
Mail Domain:[[email protected]]      Mail originates from this domain. (For many E-mail servers you can use "localhost", for gmail you can use "[email protected]")
From Line Override (YES/NO):   [YES]   Make message appear to originate from mail server.
Re-Write Domain:   [blank]   If non-blank, make mail appear to come from domain. (Some mail hosts will not allow the mail to appear from elsewhere, so leave this blank unless you need to specifiy an alternate domain of origin)
RevAliases :[blank]      If non-blank, alias mail from "root" to come from [email protected]. ( use: "root:[email protected]" ) Some mail servers will not allow mail from "root" without it being aliased to your own account.

A few questions if you don't mind.

Spaces and # etc may fark up ssmtp

Do special characters other than # mess things up as well?  Most of my passwords, including gmail, contain characters such as $, @, &, etc.

Forward "root" email to:  [[email protected]]  Enter the e-mail account where mail to root will be forwarded.

Can I use any other email address here, such as my Verizon.net address, or does it have to be anther gmail address?

Mail ID:[[email protected]]      Your e-mail account on the mail server. (just the ID without the @server.com) Needed if your mail server requires authorization, leave blank otherwise.

So I need to use the @gmail.com part even though the instructions say not to us that part?

Thanks again mbryanr!

Likely,  but not certain which other characters...but spaces do as well with gmail.

You'll get an error like this:

ssmtp: Authorization failed (454 4.7.0 Cannot authenticate due to temporary system problem. Try again later. 14sm88672bwz.5)

Forward "root" email to:  [[email protected]]  Enter the e-mail account where mail to root will be forwarded.

Yes...just have to check the port that is used to forward email.  ie port 25 for SSL gmail.

Mail ID:[[email protected]]      Your e-mail account on the mail server. (just the ID without the @server.com) Needed if your mail server requires authorization, leave blank otherwise.

@ part is not required...I copied that from another thread, but just checked my ssmtp setup for verification.

I'm glad it's not just me then, I sat up to 2am this morning trying to get this to work and couldn't !!!

I am running 5RC1, and have installed ssmtp_2.64.orig.tar.bz2. I too noticed that UnMenu  reports ssmtp_2.62.orig.tar.bz2 as Current version='2.64' expected '2.62' and so did not install this version

I have set the Configuration Variables as follows:-

Forward "root" email to [email protected]

E-Mail Server:mail.btinternet.com

Use TLS?(YES/NO):NO

Mail ID:[email protected] My mail server requires authorisation, if I miss out @btinternet.com after my name as per the instructions the message is refused by the mail server

Mail Password: my login password

Mail Domain:localhost

From Line Override:Yes

Re-Write Domain:Blank

RevAliases :Blank

On going to the User Scripts tab and pressing the Test Mail Button, I keep getting the reply send-mail: 501 Syntax error in arguments. I don't know what to try next !!!

I just can't get the ^%$& thing to work.  :P

I when back to my Verizon account and tried that again because there aren't any special characters in that password.  No go.  If I use Putty it just returns me to the root@Tower:^# prompt, but if I use the script inside of unMenu that says "Send Test Email" I get this:

Mail being sent to root.  With any luck, it will be forwarded properly.

/usr/sbin/sendmail: Exec format error

. . . message not sent

In case anyone is interested; I solved the issue.

The hostname needs to be a valid name, so I used the dydns name I have.  Also for some reason the outgoing port 465 does not work, it only works for windows applications.  It needs to be a different number  for the secure port (587).

Did you try the above for the verizon account?

and check these two threads on verizon...

I tried everything listed in those threads.  I tried both port 465 and 587 along with using localhost and the domain that I own (www.mydomain.com).  I also added [email protected] in the RevAlias box.

Unfortunately none of that worked.  No email and no error in the telnet session.  Using the script I still get the "Exec format error".  Thanks for sticking with me on this one.

The "exec format error" can be a corrupted file (ie bad formatting - what did you use to modify the .conf file?) or start over with the original ssmtp (2.62 version)

  • Author

I didn't edit the .conf file because in the link you gave me, Joe L. posted "I did add a new field on the config screen for revaliases.  It does nothing if left blank."

I assumed that all I had to do was add my address in the RevAliases field and that would substitute for editing the .config file?
