Upgrade to larger cache drive in version 7

Featured Replies

I found great help and video for updating the cache drive in version 6.  But the options are slightly different in version 7.

Is there an easy way to move everything off the cache in v7 and then move to the larger drive?  I have both cache SSDs installed, the larger one is not mounted or formatted yet.

I think I have everything backed up using the latest appdata backup, but want to check in here before forging ahead.

I have one docker (plex), I have no VMs.

Thanks for any advice.

more info needed... not much chagend even the old vidoes adn steps still have nice tad bits mroe the interface gui moved but process si the same...

see on maintain data for plex...

and docs:

some video as well:

if posbile its better to add a new pool name with the oter disk and unraid format and copy the data over to have a working clne and then remove the old cache disk pool...
few area need updated as path may change for where the data exist now...

That link is great, since it directly addresses the changes.  So prior directions had me running appdata backup, etc.   With using this technique and just letting mover do everything, I assume I can leave out ape-data backup step from prior videos...?

Correct following the FAQ:

However its good to have backups. a backup is only good on how / if you are able to restore....

How do I replace/upgrade my single cache device? (unRAID v6.2 and above only)

This procedure assumes that there are at least some dockers and/or VMs related files on the cache disk, some of these steps are unnecessary if there aren't.

  • Stop all running Dockers/VMs
  • Settings -> VM Manager: disable VMs and click apply
  • Settings -> Docker: disable Docker and click apply
  • For v6.11.5 or older: Click on Shares and change to "Yes" all cache shares with "Use cache disk:" set to "Only" or "Prefer"
  • For v6.12.0 or newer: Click on all shares that are using the pool you want to empty and change them to have the pool as primary storage, array as secondary storage and mover action set to move from pool to array
  • Check that there's enough free space on the array and invoke the mover by clicking "Move Now" on the Main page
  • When the mover finishes check that your cache is empty (any files on the cache root will not be moved as they are not part of any share)
  • Stop array, replace cache device, assign it, start array and format new cache device (if needed), check that it's using the filesystem you want
  • For v6.11.5 or older: Click on Shares and change to "Prefer" all shares that you want moved back to cache
  • For v6.12.0 or newer: Click on Shares and change the mover action to move from array to pool for all shares that you want moved back to cache
  • On the Main page click "Move Now"
  • When the mover finishes re-enable Docker and VMs

It worked but I needed to re-add my plex docker.  I am not sure if that is expected or not.

The last question is the correct setup for the appdata, system, and domains shares.   When I started they were setup as Array primary, Cache secondary and mover set to move to cache.   Now they are cache primary, array secondary and mover set to move to cache.    As long as mover is set to move to cache, does it matter what is primary or secondary?

I also have an isos directory that is empty, no VMs so expected.   Is that just a standard directory and if so is it supposed to be setup like the appdata, etc.?

Thanks,

Ross

Correct which should be listed in the docker tab by clicking add container and selecting the plex template from the list.

Normally data is set to be on 1 primary disk.

example default appdata share used for unraids default place to set docker data.

yes by default data is set to be used to caches as usually cache is the faster disk. and secondary to the array for long-term storage, latter.

With unraid v7 and the ability to ditch the array and with the pool implementation of zfs disk, this is now user preference on how they want to handle data and shares...

Ideally you only want a single primary storage set.
