Duplicate Applications

Featured Replies

Hi @Squid!!

First of all, I want to sincerely thank you for all the work you've done around Community Applications.
Without your efforts, Unraid would be missing so many amazing apps and opportunities. Your work truly makes a huge difference for many of us – myself included – and I deeply appreciate it!

However, I would like to share a small observation:
Recently, I've noticed that within the Community Applications, existing content is increasingly being "re-published" under new entries. I generally don't have an issue with duplicates or alternative versions – often they offer real added value.
But lately, it seems that some of these new entries are more like "spam," without offering any meaningful improvements over existing templates.

So my question is:
Are there any considerations or options in place to address this? Perhaps some form of moderation or restrictions for users who repeatedly submit near-identical apps without clear added value?
I absolutely don't want to discourage creativity or alternative approaches – my concern is more about maintaining the quality and keeping the space clean and manageable.

Once again, a big thank you for everything you do for the community!
And of course, thanks for taking the time to read my feedback.

Best regards,

giganode

I feel exactly the same, I also don't like the fact that icons are now replaced with placeholders like:

TBH, I'm also not a big fan from containers with three dashes in the name, why?

Re: Outright dupes

IE: identical docker repositories.  Generally dupes are removed in this circumstances.  Criteria between which to keep is which template is more complete.  Dupes having same docker repository but the makeup of the template changes the operation of the container in some fundamental way means that they are effectively different applications and allowed.

Re: Effectively multiple templates are duplicates of each other but different repositories.

Allowed, but TBH I'm not a particular fan of this situation.  It does ultimately lead into the question that comes up a lot of "Which Plex do I install".  My personal preference I'm not going to reiterate as it tends to start long drawn out arguments here, and the decision of LT management was made a long time ago which dictates that this kind of stuff is allowed.

Note that regarding things like when #1 comes into play.  When there is a prolific maintainer that does more or less create templates at random with no support etc, then decision regarding dupe removal tends to be skewed towards having that maintainer's version removed.  Additionally, in those situations I am also far less likely to issue PR's on GitHub to fix any errors in the templates, and also a primary reason why certain template errors I now have classified as fatal because there is one common mistake made by maintainers that I'm sick of issuing PRs for, so feed just automatically drops the app.  Other common errors I do however automatically adjust the template so that it is correct.  TBH, it's very rare that a template you wind up installing via Apps actually matches what the maintainer has specified.

Dupe removal I am currently slightly behind schedule on going through everything, but I do get notifications every single time a duplicated docker repository has been added into the system.

Things have also been tightened up regarding Donation links, and with further tightening possible.  Supporting Donation Links via docker tab, and CA was something that I incorporated as my "Donation" to the maintainers / authors for creating / supporting the apps that I use.  However, there are some people that do try and game the system, and also other gaming to get positioning in lists higher.  Gaming is something which I do always try and catch, and at times will rectify the method of gaming.

I always do welcome any and all comments on the app inclusion policies etc.  But at the end of the day, the Apps tab is populated by a community driven effort.  While everything is moderated either automatically or manually, I do keep an eye on everything constantly.  Trust me that while I only use a few containers, I am most likely the user who is in Apps the most -> if I don't go in there at least a couple of times a day, I'm either sidetracked with attempting to apologize to my wife for something (usually because I'm a male and no matter what I'm in the wrong) or I'm laid up in bed sick or on a rare occasion proving if only to myself that there is a life outside of Unraid & CA.

It's getting worse :D

I have so many question marks in my head I don't even know what to install first :P

In all seriousness, I fully understand that not everything has an icon but the screenshot above looks not that great or does it?

And as far as I can tell, every link to the support forum is linked to the corresponding GitHub repo.

In this case the ?'s are specifically defined by the template author, but then if you check the relevant app they don't have a logo of their own. Can't exactly expect template authors to design a logo for 3rd party apps that don't have one.

IMO for any new additions the support link should be restricted to being a link to forums.unraid.net or the template gets rejected though. Ideally a standalone thread and not "the same for all of a maintainer's templates".

ChatGPT? I do the same for NUT Actions.

It‘s nothing against the author or anything but in my oppinion CA doesn‘t look that good anymore.

I completely see where you are going with that because I do it that way but even when having a dedicated thread for every container/app isn‘t ideal, just look at the Nvidia Driver Support thread, nobody reads through it even when the solution is on the same page.

Just look at the Template Errors in CA Statistics… 600+ errors in templates…

However I also understand Squid since he has to be as neutral as possible.

I'd rather see a question mark than more AI slop, but that's gonna be personal preference :D

Blasphemy!  The ravings of a mad man, I say!

Seriously, thank you both for showing us how the sausage is made, as well as your dedication and effort.

Alternatively, is there a possibility to add a hidden filter which we can apply manually but permanently?

This is the sub-forum for Forum Feedback, which would be assumed to be on subjects related to this support forum site.

As Community Applications is a plug-in application supported by Squid, he probably doesn't visit this sub forum much. Along with CA, he also has a lot of other applications and issues on his plate.

I would recommend you bring up the subject in the appropriate Community Applications support thread.
