Unraid USB boot drive broke into 3 pieces

Featured Replies

Greetings all.  Had a switch fall off wall and took out my usb stick from back of the unraid server.  It's now in 3 pieces.

Took off the casing and tried to boot with it.  Nope

Plugged it into my windows computer to see if I could snag the files.....Nope

OK, I know I'll need a new USB stick and need to use the creator tool but have a couple of questions

I know I had latest version on but how do I get my new USB license without paying again? Never lost a usb where I needed this.

Now that I have that, how do I get the old configuration so I don't lose everything??? I don't have Unraid Connect.  I guess I will now.

The good news is 2 days ago, I took a screen shot of my array config. At least I have that going for me.

Thanks in advance

If you dont have a backup or copy of your key you will have to contact Unraid to get the key back.  You would need a new key anyways with a new USB.  Even without Connect you can run a manual USB stick back up.  Sounds like you have your order of the drives in your array.

Thanks Gragorg.  I ended up just buying it again.  Thankfully I have it all up and running.  But Problems...

I see all my docker appdata on my cache drive but have no clue how to get them showing up again back in docker.

Now I can't map my server on win 11 but my backup is there. It detects it but won't map to the folder

From this post:

     https://forums.unraid.net/topic/177975-formatted-my-pc-and-installed-fresh-windows-11-now-cant-access-smb-shares/#findComment-1478526

Do this to set up a Share Access user on your Unraid server with a Windows Credential on your Windows 11 computer:

Guest access is now more difficult to setup then setting up a secure login using Credentials.

EDIT:  Also from here----

With a fresh install of Unraid, you also lose some 'Grandfathered' settings which make using Guest access much simpler.

Hi Frank, been a few since we've been problem solving

I went in as you said above, created a credential that was my user and password on the server.

Pic 1 is what I was seeing before I tried to map.  You'll notice Tower shows on Network but not on the mapped drives

Pic 2 is what I see if I click on the carat beside Tower, it goes away.

Pic 3 is how I start with using different cred's. It ask for my cred's to Tower...no problem entering those...then ask for Tower password...no issue entering BUT

Pic 4 is what I get after entering cred's.  Diagnostics states Windows can't find. When I run diagnostics, it comes back with Pic 5

Perplexing that it sees it but can't see my share. I suspect it's one little setting I'm missing. I've gone back into UNRaid and all looks fine but......

I've done all the tweaks in Windows including my network and sharing, but I can get this unstuck.  I'm getting closer with the credentials, I think, but.....

Well, the one win is my Plex data was all saved and applied back to the files!  Strangely, I can go on the web and access my Plex server but just not on my network!

Thanks for pitching in to help

Guess what? Found that one little setting. Export setting in the shares.  I think I switched to No at one point to see if switching back and forth on it would get it going.  I think the credentialing and then turn export back on is finally what did the trick. I tested the theory on another PC and yup, wouldn't connect, but as soon as I did the credentials, no issue!

Thanks again Frank!

I was just preparing a post with a series of things to check and that was one of them.  It has been years since I started from scratch in setting up an Unraid server and I do not remember all of the default settings.  Plus, many of the old defaults have been changed as security concerns have become a bigger issue.  Many things are now turned off and you have deliberately turn them on (Telnet and SSH, for example).  I suspect that all of the Network services are turned off and you have to turn on the ones that you want to use.

For anyone else who has a problem and is reading this thread, start by setting up up a a Share Access user on your Unraid server and a Windows credential on your Windows client/computer for that user.  Yes, you can avoid doing this BUT Microsoft is determined to stop the practice of using guest login privileges on Windows clients (and their server software).  You will be in a never ending whack-a-mole battle with them as they tighten up security if you really want to keep using wide-open file access.

One more thing.  You may want to add your servers to the quick access list in Window File Manager.  How to do this is explained the attachment (An Alternative Method to Network Neighborhood.pdf) in the first post of this thread.

https://forums.unraid.net/topic/110580-security-is-not-a-dirty-word-unraid-windows-1011-smb-setup/

Windows File Manger with quick access links to my Unraid server looks like this:

image.png.3ec2f731985803eb1a0b1a4f91cd1a80.png

Notice that the Unraid server 'elsie1' does not even show up under "Network"!  ('ROSE' is my other Unraid server and 'HUGO_F' is a Windows 11 Pro running peer-to-peer sharing.)   Why all the servers don't show up is a question to which no one seems to have an answer.  Tomorrow, 'elsie1' may be there.........     In my experience, the quick access link will always worked.  I don't even look under "Network" for a server anymore.

In case you are wondering, that 'Network Neighborhood' is a quick access link to a folder on my desktop that contains shortcuts to nine different computers-- The two Unraid servers and seven Windows computers in a Windows peer-to-peer setup.

All good advice Frank.  Thank you again. I'm like you, it has been sooooo long since I had to start from scratch, I was indeed playing "whack-a-mole!"
