May 5, 201214 yr Author Thats bad luck. It is pretty rare seeing a SM server mobo defective. I have seen them get damaged with human assistance, but not from the factory. I should have tried booting mine yesterday without ram when i had it all apart. see if I got beep codes. Yes, never had this happen to me before . I built several PCs, from 386 to Core i7 (Socket 1366) but all simply worked right after building, sometimes tweaking RAM-timing a bit. Basically it's not that difficult: Unpacking the stuff, Assembling CPU and HSF, memory, mounting it in case, connecting PSU cables, front panel stuff, monitor, keyboard and LAN cable. And then firing it up. Taking anti-static measurement into considerations off-course. But my first Supermicro board causes trouble. BAD LUCK.
May 5, 201214 yr I managed to down my server.without ram I got 5 short + 1 long beep. I did not pull my CPU. I have no more thermal grease
May 6, 201214 yr Author Thanks John, Do you get those beeps immediately after switching on? I guess my motherboard fails a pre-check in the early stages. Did you notice any yellow LED when switching on the server/PSU? How many LEDs are lit when the server is booting/running? Where is the metal plate for on the back of motherboard, underneath the CPU-socket? I will request RMA, nothing else left I'm afraid.
May 7, 201214 yr Author Have requested an RMA for the board. Got a cross-shipment from Supermicro Europe in the Netherlands. Had to go through a German distributor because the Dutch retailer wouldn't do it. Unfortunately I have to wait a 7 days, cause Supermicro Netherlands doesn't have the boards in stock. Must say the people of Supermicro have been very helpfull so far.
May 7, 201214 yr ...the unhelpfulness of your retailer makes me wonder if they weren't aware they sold you a faulty board 0_o I hope that's not the case and you get it sorted!

Lets's say I give them the benefit of the doubt. Glad I'm dealing with Supermicro directly now. They could see that the board came from the distributor in Germany, and put me on the right track.
May 8, 201214 yr Author Makes me think: What are the odds that the problem I described is caused by a faulty CPU? It's just strange that after using Asus, Gigabyte, MSI and many others without any trouble it's a Supermicro board that does cause trouble.
May 8, 201214 yr It is very odd, but I'd suggest it's even more odd for a CPU to be at fault. I've had hundreds of CPU's pass through my hands over the years and never had one that had to be RMA'ed. Could be just luck though I guess! I'd probably be half tempted to pick up an i3 2100 to check.

May 8, 201214 yr Author According to a short-list I got from Supermicro these are compatible: De Pentium G850, G840, G620, G620T en Celeron G540, G530, G530T en G440 My local shop had a G530 that I got for 20 Euros. It gives the same result as the E3-1240, so I guess the board is definitely broken .
May 9, 201214 yr Oh good to know, they don't seem to mention that in any of their spec sheets! Hope the rest of the RMA goes well, you'll love the board when you finally get a hold of it!
May 9, 201214 yr Author Yeah, looking forward to it. Remote Management, ESXi, and so on, not to forget unraid off course!!
