May 6, 20251 yr Hello there, I'm asking for your support about "Reallocated sector count" warning message on my Toshiba MG10ACA20TE 20TB (using Btrfs) disk: I performed one Short S.M.A.R.T. test and one Deep S.M.A.R.T. test after this warning, but it doesn't report any error: I also run a Read-check but no issue has been found: Do I have to worry about this situation? Am I missing any other disk test? Any suggestion? You'll find S.M.A.R.T. logs attached. Really thanks for your time! nas-smart-20250506-1341.zip
May 6, 20251 yr Community Expert Since the extended SMART test passed, and assuming those reallocated sectors already existed, the disk is OK for now, up to you if you want to keep it or replace now, if it were me, and the number of realloc sectors remains the same, I would keep it for now.

Okay man, really thanks!
May 7, 20251 yr Author Hello again, The situation is getting worse quickly, I've received 17 more "reallocated sector" notifications: This is the actual disk status: I don't have a parity disk so I assume it would be better to get a replacement disk. What do you think? Do you have any suggestion about a different brand/model SATA 20TB disk? I can get a full refund for this disk, so I could buy something better. Really thanks

Not really, there are only 3 brands, and except for older WD disks, before they bought Hitachi, they have been all reliable for me.
May 7, 20251 yr Community Expert FWIW I avoid Toshiba drives like the plague - they just seem to up and die on me without warning
May 7, 20251 yr Community Expert For the lack of any other data, have a look at Backblaze's report for 2024: https://www.backblaze.com/blog/backblaze-drive-stats-for-2024/

Here's an overview of my setup: I have a UGreen NASync DXP6800 Pro with 32GB of RAM (2x16GB Crucial DDR5-4800) and a 2TB WD Black SN850X NVMe drive (which I had in my old gaming PC). I use the NVMe as a cache pool for 4-5 Docker containers, with JDownloader and Plex being the most important. JDownloader operates entirely on the NVMe, including downloads and extractions, after which I move the content to the HDD. Plex also runs on the NVMe but reads the multimedia files from the HDD. My NAS operates 24/7 and is protected by an APC UPS. I have an end-to-end 10Gbps LAN connection between the NAS and the streaming device, and my multimedia files are quite large (4K HDR/DV, around 60-80GB each). So, which ~20TB HDD would you recommend as a replacement for my Toshiba HDD? I've looked at 20TB models like the WD Red Pro, WD Gold, and Ultrastar DC, but I can't really tell the difference between them for my needs. They all seem similar to me. I've used WD Red Pro drives in the past with a Synology NAS. Then I switched to Synology HDDs (I had a HAT5310-8T manufactured by Toshiba) and I remember it being very quiet. Therefore, I'm looking for a good option to replace my Toshiba HDD: it should be at least 20TB, 7200rpm, and as quiet as possible. I'm not considering Seagate as an option since all the HDDs I've owned from that brand have given me a terrible experience. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I hope you can help me, really thanks!

I also see that it's out of stock on the official WD Europe store and even on Amazon.it. Which similar or better alternatives are there? I found a deal on the Seagate Ironwolf Pro 20TB. Is this model suitable for my needs? Or WD Gold will be better since I can't get the WD Red Pro? Thanks Edited May 7, 20251 yr by rgreco

You'll find plenty of complaints from one camp over another camp, so it's not a black and white 'buy this and you'll be fine' kind of deal. My two cents is every WD drive that's failed for me has let me know way in advance (knock on wood) and let me get the data off of it, whereas Toshibas have just flat out quit, and Seagate drives will let you know they're going to fail right about the same time as they die and I have never been able to get data off beforehand. The biggest takeaway, back up your important data so a failure isn't catastrophic, because what's been good for me may not be so for you
May 7, 20251 yr Community Expert Look at my Forum Signature. (You may have to turn them on to see mine.) I have been using the Seagate Iron Wolf drives. I just want to use a drive 'rated' for NAS usage rather than for standard usage. (And I am not sure if that rational is really totally valid!) Spending the extra money for a drive for commercial Server use does not seem really necessary as I don't think they have have much additional quality and value for the extra money except for the longer warranties that the professional drives generally have. (I have always considered that the length of the warranty is a marketing decision and not based on Technical information. Remember that the cost for a possible replacement under that warranty is a future expense and not one in the current quarter thus it does not affect the current 'bottom line'. If I were a IT manager for a mid-to-large size corporation, I would probably buy the 'Pro' drives because it a disaster were to happen, I could always tell my non-tech bosses that I bought the best drives available for our company use. 😁) I know folks swear that they would never buy X-company drives because a failure or two that they have experienced. I had four of the worst model (Seagate 3000DM001) and I know that, at least, two of them failed within the warranty period. BUT I pulled the last one out-of-service (because I needed a more storage), the counter for the 'Power on hours' had rolled over! Edited May 7, 20251 yr by Frank1940

I hope you can help me, really thanks! I would recommend goharddrive.com (check their ebay store as well, sometimes has different stuff / better prices) or serverpartdeals.com. Focus on "factory recertified" drives, not "factory refurbished". Recertified means that they were malfunctioning and fixed, or returned. Refurbished means they may have been used for years. Goharddrive offers 5 year warranty on their recertified models, while serverpartdeals offers 2 year warranty. You'll save a ton of money in the long run and both companies have great reputations about honoring their warranty and replacing drives quickly.
