May 9, 201214 yr Such a good deal, but I dislike the one year warranty. Argh.. i ordered 5 today for a raid 5 array. I didn't even see the new warranty. my old ones were 3 or 5 year...
May 9, 201214 yr I sent mine back because of the 1 year warranty. At least they've updated the site to reflect that.
May 9, 201214 yr Everyone has dropped their warranties. This happened about ten years ago too, and they crept back up. I think the best bet right now is probably Western Digital, because although they too have dropped their warranty period, they at least allow you the option to extend it. Plus I've found their RMA process to be really painless. I think over the past two years, I've returned at least ten drives. I have three right now in process: a Seagate, a Samsung, and a WD. Many of my drives are aging. The Seagate I'm sending back if four years old with a five year warranty. The Samsung is three years old with a three year warranty (in fact it's expiring next week!), and the WD is two years old with a three year warranty. I have had two other drives fail (both Seagates) recently. One is a total gratuitous failure of a refurb that I received from another RMA. It only lasted six months, but now it's out of warranty. The other is sending SMART error messages, and is three years old and also out of warranty (by a month!). But a one year warranty is practically worthless.
May 9, 201214 yr Author Good luck finding a "cheap" hard drive that has more than a 1 year warranty now. http://www.theverge.com/2011/12/17/2641569/seagate-wd-hdd-one-year-warranty-reduction-2012 With Samsung now owned and made by Seagate and Fujitsu now owned and made by Western Digital, the only drives you'll see with more than one year warranty will probably be enterprise versions which are twice, sometimes three or four times more expensive. I hate it just as much as everyone else but with only two main manufacturers now, there's not much you can do.
May 9, 201214 yr Hitachi still has a three year warranty, but they're more expensive. Western Digital's Green drives have a two year warranty, and their Black drives have a three year. WD offers extended warranties directly as well, which is nice. You can also purchase an extended warranty from SquareTrade. I just got a quote for $17.99 for the Seagate 2TB I just bought. I think I'll jump on it.
May 9, 201214 yr I've gotten 3 - 2 TB Seagate green drives from Best Buy in the last couple months. They all have a 5 year warranty. Not the cheapest things, but the warranty is nice.
May 9, 201214 yr I've gotten 3 - 2 TB Seagate green drives from Best Buy in the last couple months. They all have a 5 year warranty. Not the cheapest things, but the warranty is nice. The ST320005N4A or STBD2000101? Five years for ~20% more upfront seems fair to me. I've NEVER bought a retail disk, so this would be something new...
May 9, 201214 yr Here's the link to what i bought... http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Seagate+-+Barracuda+2TB+Internal+Serial+ATA+Hard+Drive+for+Desktops/9419382.p?id=1218102739460&skuId=9419382&st=2tb%20seagate&cp=1&lp=4
