I would even go as far as to say that maybe some features should be disabled in the 5.0 release...

 

From my personal view one of the main reasons for the 5.0 release is >2Tb support. This part has been working since beta1. Problems were with hardware (fixed with the older kernel), AFP en NFS.

 

I don't use AFP/NFS/LSI but would like >2Tb support, so I've been told for more than a year that I should stick with 4.7.....

 

Why not release a 5.0 with >2Tb support, without AFP/NFS support, and tell all those people who want AFP/NFS to stick with 4.7. NFS/AFP can be added in later releases.

 

It would make sense, as there is no workaround for >2Tb support, but there are workarounds for no NFS/AFP (just use Samba).

gfjardim is correct.  A 5.0 final should not come out if NFS/AFP are not working.

 

I understand the want for >2TB support but the other things (AFP/NFS) are just as important in my mind.

As for everyone else post here about issues (and I know this will sound like a broken record):

For the love of god PLEASE post a syslog with your reports.  I understand that the first issue you might have you were not monitoring it and such.  You need to REPRODUCE the error and provide a syslog before any sort of decent attempt can be made to figure out what might be going on.

When you have an issue the first time:

1.  Post about it with syslog if you have

2.  Restart server if needed

3.  Open first telnet session, login and type:

    a. top

4.  Open second telnet session, login and type:

    a. tail -f -n 100 /var/log/syslog

5.  POST a hardware breakdown of you entire system or if it is in your signature please make reference to it

To reiterate what has been said - can people posting problems in here only do so with no plugins running? They're muddying the waters tremendously.

 

johnodon - make sure you have simple features removed / uninstalled / not running. Then see if you have a problem. If you don't the the problem is with simplefeatures and you can ask in that forum thread. And if I understand correctly you've now seen the same problem with your old b14 and RC installs. So it's probably not a problem with this RC.

People testing these betas and RC's should have as close to vanilla configurations as possible. The data is tainted if you have other plugins/services etc. running. It makes it far more complicated to trouble shoot an issue for Tom and even worse so when the issue isn't even related to unRaid but a plugin in general.

Total Painless Update from V5.b14 to V5.RC-3

Followed the instructions amd just replaced the bizroot & bizimage files. Powered my HP 40N server with 4 Hitachi 3TB drives up and it started the array automatically no errors and no hassles. Running latest UnMenu as well as the Cach_dirs script.

No joy.

 

In the pic below, the files circled in red are b14 versions.  bzrootbak and bzimagebak are the rc3 files.

 

Box pingable but no GUI and no Flash share.  The verison of SimpleFeatures I have running was working fine for me on b14.

This doesn't appear to be anything to do with the RC itself. Try replacing the files on the flash (including the go file since you modified it with add-ons) with the files from a fresh new download or start a support thread about how you are incapable of figuring out how to upgrade and disable your add-ons properly.

Just finished a parity check with RC3.

 

Goes much faster than RC2, 77.1 MB/s versus 72.0 MB/s (or in time 7H12M versus 7H42M).

 

I don't see the spin-down messages anymore.

 

The "unable to install the realtek firmware patch" warning is also gone, I presume it has been installed.

 

All in all it is going into a very good direction :)

Hey Tom,

 

Finally had a chance to upgrade from rc2-test to rc3 and the buffering thing still exists.  There is nothing in the log (no lines at all) during the transfer.  b14 still gives consistent write speeds while the RCs are giving peaks and troughs.  They complete in roughly the same time.

 

Will try to isolate if it's a disk related buffer or a networking related buffer.

Thank you BRiT to summarize those changes. It make our life easier :)

 

For those running on their own full Slackware distro, the changes involve moving to the latest Linux kernel (3.0.31), the /etc/unraid-version file, changes to /usr/local/sbin/emhttp, /usr/local/sbin/shfs, and /usr/src/linux-*/drivers/md/md.c, and inclusion of Realtek firmware (/lib/firmware/rtl_nic) and the related kernel config change for that.

Since I have everything backed up to my Synology I upgraded to the RC3 from 4.7. Everything went smooth. I have an Intel mainboard with two SATA cards installed running 14 drives. I would like to basically keep my user shares and all my settings but dump ALL my extra add ons and UNmenu for now. What are the bare essential files that are needed? I'd rather ask first then start renaming folders and stuff. I just want a clean start. I've installed too many add-ons in the past and all those files are still on my flash drive.

 

I have another question about RC3. When I run MC using Putty it isn't displayed properly like it was before on 4.7. I've attached a screen shot of what I mean. Is there a fix I can do to make that look normal?

I am running RC-3 with no problem using the UnMenu plugin as I consider it essential because it gives greater detailed feedback. In addition I am running the cache_dirs user script.

 

 

Just finished the Parity Check on my HP N40L server having 4 Hitachi 3TB drives and it was excellent:

 

Parity Check Speed:    Was between 126  MB/sec & 51  MB/sec

Total Time:    592 minutes

Sync errors corrected:    0

I know some feel nothing should be introduced, But... Even Tom came back a few time on how many drives would we want. Just about everyone came back with 24, which is not unreasonable if it can be done. My personal thoughts are 5.0 needs to be more than what 4.7 was. To keep up with the times.

 

 

So you complain, vehemently, in the rc1 thread about how long this is taking (page 3), but want feature creep.

will post full logs if needed just never noticed this, is it normal when the array is offline that it appears in the syslog that every 5 seconds it does a load unload inventory routine??  After starting the array all is good.

I agree. Please give us 22 data disks, parity, and cache so it can be tested before 5.0 final. It would save me so much money as i'm currently upgrading 2TB drives to 3TB, and i'm nearly out of space still. (Never thought i'd need over 52TB!)

 

 

Edit, next part was fixed in 12a:

It would be nice to be able to preclear more than 1 disk at a time on my 20 data disk, parity, and cache system too. Seems like unRAID refuses to detect more than 23 drives at once even if they aren't in the array. Could you make unRAID detect like 30 drives? I constantly upgrade 2-3 drives at the same time and having to preclear them one at a time makes it a very lengthy process.

 

 

Disagree. We are in RC which should be for bug fixes only.

Enhancements should wait for 5.1

 

Whereas I would love to have 24/25 drive capability, lets get 5.0 final out the door FIRST.

will post full logs if needed just never noticed this, is it normal when the array is offline that it appears in the syslog that every 5 seconds it does a load unload inventory routine??  After starting the array all is good.

Are you running ANY add-ons? 

Specifically, I'm theorizing this behavior might exhibit itself if you were refreshing the browser's web-page.

(5 seconds sounds like a refresh interval that might be used to keep status up to date)

What part ? that this was one of (my) main reasons for wanting the 5.0 release, or that it was working. Maybe I was wrong in stating that it worked from beta1, but on the forums there a lots of people running betaXX with >2Tb drives without problems.
