SMART test: read failure. SMART overall health passed. What am I looking at here?

Featured Replies

Hello all

Disk 6 and 7 have started to record errors which I though might have been a connection issue as these drives run off a new HBA card that I recently installed. Drive 6 passed the short SAMRT self test, but the extended SMART test resulted in message "completed: read failure". Drive 7 also shows some errors, and is currently undergoing an extended SMART test (10% at time of writing). I have yet to record any data to either drive 6 or 7 (they would be next to be written using high water). Disk 6 and 7 were the last drives to be added to the array after I purchased a HBA card. Disk 6 is over 6 years old, and Disk 7 is over 7 years old, and were both erased then migrated to the UNRAID server from a much older NAS.

Has Disk 6 failed, and is Disk 7 not far behind?

Sorry for my ignorance, this is all very new to me. I have spent a lot of time trying to understand the SMART test by scrolling forums, but I am still having a hard time working out if I need to buy two new drives.

Cheers

If a SMART test fails, the disk should be replaced, overall heath just means there's no "failing now" attribute.

Thank you! Drive 7 has a couple of errors (98) but completed the extended SMART test "without error". Would this drive be cause for concern, or do I need to check the cabling?

Thanks

It depends on the errors, or those read errors? Post the diags if the syslog covers them.
