[SOLVED] Max drives on single power outlet from PSU?

Featured Replies

I have a SeaSonic X-Series 400watt passive cooled power supply I intend to use for my new unRAID NAS.

Now when I am about to install the cabling I wonder what the best solution would be:

Can I use 2x molex cables split up in molex -> 3x sata power (so total of 6 sata green drives) and also run a molex to 2x fan adapter off the same outlet in the PSU?

Would the amp needed be ok?

Or

Would it be better to get/make 2x 6pin PSU plug to 3x sata power to drive the 6 green drives from 2x different outlets in the PSU?

It is ages ago I was building a PC last time so really need your help here.

Depends how many 12V rails the PSU has...

If it's a single rail it won't matter which you do.

It is a single rail with 33amps on the 12v+ rail

Just so everybody understands, this is what I ment:

Anyone else agree in the above posters statement? (just to be sure :) )

How many SATA-power cables/connectors come with the PSU? Since it's a single 12V rail it doesn't really matter how you do it.

I prefer 2 separate cables with 3 connectors each but that's mainly because I hate those 3 to 1 adapters.

I'd say the second option is best.

As stated above, it doesn't really matter which way you do it if you have a single rail PSU. It will put more load on the connectors/wire itself but nothing they can't handle for the setup you have there. It is generally good practice to "share the load" around although even some multi-rail PSU's have dedicated rails for motherboard, CPU, PCI-E etc. and so a lot of the time the peripheral connectors (SATA/Molex/FDD) share a rail anyway.

I thought so too, trouble is that the Seasonic only come with 1x 6pin to 3x sata and 1x 6pin to 2x sata - for option a I need the 2x sata for parity and cache (not drawn in the pic) and then I have only 3 sata plugs left. I can plug in 3x 6pin cables at a time to the PSU, so if I just had 1x 6pin to 3 sata more I would be set (1x 6pin molex for fans with adapters for sata cache/parity, 2x 6pin for 2x3 drives).

I know it is also possible to use the 6pin to 3x molex as parity/cahe via a molex to 2x sata, then a molex to 1x sata then the fans another 6pin to 3x sata and then the 6pin to 2x sata = really cheap adapters but a lot of them so it looks horrible... I'm a neat freak ;)

Have just asked Performance PCs if they would be interested in sponsoring me two of these :D

Rest of the build is payed by me, but I just ordered some stuff from them the other day and postage from US to Denmark is very very expensive so hoping they are willing to give

Thanks for the quick replies, I will mark it as solved now, good job  8)
