I have this one:

and it works quite well.  Similar card, but less expensive.  (Currently out of stock, but assume it will be back in stock quickly).

It is a PCI card, not PCI-E, so performance dong parity check (all drive running at once) is not superfantastic.  But for normal use the performance is excellent.  Good value and very reliable in my experience.

It is PCI-X, 64bit. RU sure this is the one you have? Works on plain PCI?

I have the same Supermicro card & it works great on a regular pci slot. Parity check sucks but regular use is fine.

I have the same card and yes it works fine in a plain 32-bit PCI slot.... the extra connectors for 64bit PCI-x just hand out and don't connect to anything.  This is typical of PCI-X cards that are downward compatible with 32-bit PCI slots.

As bubbaQ and PhilH said, it works fine in a PCI slot.

PCI-X motherboards are hard to find and expensive.  PCI-E has taken over.

If you want something that will perform better for parity checks and multiple simultaneous streams, consider this one.  It is only 4 ports, but connects to PCI-E x4 (or x16) slot.

Hi bjp999,

could you tell me a little more about your experience with adaptec card you posted above ?

I have a very fast setup using a ASUS A8n-VM on 4 all onboard SATA with WD750...I can build parity with 75mb/sec, but my first attempt to add more drives using a old promise pci card got my speed of course way down...so now I'm looking for the best card to add 4 more drives...What kinda performance do you get with this card ? and will it work using unraid 4.2 I didn't uprade yet to 4.3

madmax

I have no experience with that card, but have my eye on it. Another user reported success with it (jim.white I think)

All I can say is that it works... very well.... not much more to rport  :D

ok, not much indeed...but sometimes less is more...

guess i order one and see....

thanks for the reply!
