Can anyone tell how my drive died?

Featured Replies

It's been a while since I last checked on my sever due to life getting in the way and this was the first day I had been able to actually sit down and use my PC.

Turns out that my server disabled one of my disks on 6/5 (checking on 5/8) I do see a lot of system logs from the 5th but I can't really make heads or tails of if beyond sector read errors. I also can't access the SMART stats since it's been disabled.

Anyone able to throw me a bone? I;m more just curious as to why. At this point I'm waiting for a sale on drives and I'm just going to replace all of them.

It's logged as a disk error, but then it dropped offline, so check/replace cables for disk2 and post new diags after array start.

Just assuming it would have to be after a reboot? The disk doesn't show up until I go into maintenance mode but after selecting it, it'll default back to "no device".

Typically, you power off to check/replace cables.

Just making sure there any more logs needed before the shutdown. I'll get back with the post-reboot/check when I have access the the server again.

I've been able to get back to the server. I checked all the connections and everything seemed fine. Booted up to the webGUI and it's wanting to overwrite Disk2. I haven't gotten a disk to replace it yet so I'm obviously not going to do that.

Unassign disk2, start the array, run an extended SMART test on that disk and post new diags when done.

With the disk passing the smart test, would I be able to ignore the sector read errors from the May 1st parity check? (First diags zip, syslog.txt)

Additionally would I be able to backup what I find on the emulated disk/array before doing the rebuild to say, an external drive?

Since the SMART test passed, the disk is OK for now, but if there are more read errors in the future, and the cables have been ruled out, it could have an intermittent issue, and it may be better to replace it.

You can.

Not to necro my own thread a month later but I figure I would provide an update.

I was able to get an external drive to make a backup. Took like 36 hours but it eventually got it all (I'm fairly sure).

When I booted the server up it showed the disk in question had a smart error (image attached). After running another extended test it didn't show any errors (funny how that works huh).

I'm going to try and get some time this week to swap out the cable to the drive before attempting a rebuild.

SUCCESS

Here's hoping I don't have to deal with that again.
