Building first NAS media server help!

Featured Replies

Hey everyone, I'm building my first NAS media server after 15 years of running it off a Mac Mini and external hard drives... It's just not cutting it anymore, so I was recommended to use UnRaid. I first tried to mod a Terramaster T9-450, so I've become familiar now with UnRaid and love it! However, the processor isn't cutting it for any transcoding, and it's soldered onto the motherboard.

I think my only option is going to be DIYing it and building the system, but I'm new to this, so I would love some help/advice.

My needs for the system:

  • Can run UnRaid

  • Intel Processor (one with a dedicated integrated GPU that can handle multiple transcodings at once)

  • 2.5 GB Ethernet (don’t really need 10 as that speed doesn't exist in our area at all anyways)

  • At least 8 Drive Bays (12+ would be ideal - currently have 60TB of data and will need room to grow)

  • Upgradable options for the future

  • Would be nice to have USB-C

Here’s what I’m thinking in my build:

Processor - Intel icore i7-13700K or Intel Core i5-14600K (if the board takes 14th Gen)

Motherboard - This is where I need the most help.

- Q670 maybe?

Case - Jonsbo N5

RAM - can choose between DDR4 and DDR5 when I know the motherboard, but thinking 32GB, maybe 64GB (might be overkill). I don’t think I care if it’s ECC?

Fans - Noctura Fan NF-P12

CPU cooler - Noctua NH-U12S

Hard Drives - Already have 10 hard drives to use from the old system (12-16TB range)

Power - Not sure, but maybe Corsair SF750? From what I calculate, the system will use about 550W, so a 600W would be perfect, but this 750W one has great reviews.

OTHER

  • M.2 to SATA Expansion OR PCie to SATA expansion, or SFF-8643 depending on the board… need another way to connect that many hard drives as no motherboard is going to have 12 SATA connections.

  • Some SATA cables top connect.

  • I imagine some cables/adaptors to power to the hard drives

Any help would be appreciated!
