Unraid 7.X updating existing array without parity with refurbished HDDs

Featured Replies

Hi

Before purchasing a license I tried out a disk array and had one 4GB SSD which is now failing. I copied over essential family photos to an external USB and have had the pc turned off while I waited for 2 x 16GTB Exos refurbished drives to arrive. They arrived today, initially they weren't recognised but I remove the 3.3v cable from the Sata power cable and they are now showing ok no issues reported in CrystalDisk or HardDisk Sentinel.

In order to pick up where I left off, does this sound ok?

1) Add both the drives to unraid and run pre-clear up to 4 times to make sure the drives don't generate a failure, seen badblocks recommendations, but heard that takes longer than preclear, and running pre clear up to 4 times without fail should give confidence the drives are ok? Can I run the preclear on both drives at the same time, will have both drives running of the SATA power cable with the 3.3v removed.

2) I would then add the drives as one parity and one disk to unraid (it does another pre-clear when adding them?) and copy over the files from the failing SSDD to the disk array, and when complete remove the SSDD from the array?

Thanks

James

If the plan is to remove the SSD without using a disk to replace it, it may be better to just do a new config now, create the array with the two disks and try to copy the data from the SSD and an unassigned device, or else you will have to resync parity once more to remove it.
