IOMMU Grouping for ASRock Z790 PRO RS WiFi — Passthrough Setup Help

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,
I'm planning a new Unraid build and am considering the ASRock Z790 PRO RS WiFi motherboard paired with an Intel i5-13500. My main use case involves VM passthrough, including a dedicated GPU, a PCIe USB controller, and potentially an HBA card for storage expansion (far into the future).

Here’s the build I'm envisioning:
Intel i5-13500
ASRock Z790 PRO RS WiFi
1x dedicated GPU (for a gaming VM)
1x PCIe USB controller (for passthrough)
1x HBA card (optional/future expansion)
4 NVMe drives
3–4 SATA HDDs (1 parity, 2–3 data drives) - to start

What I’m hoping to confirm:
Does this motherboard allow clean IOMMU grouping (i.e., GPU, USB controller, and HBA each in their own IOMMU group without ACS override)?

Are VT-d, Above 4G Decoding, and ACS override options available and functional in the BIOS?

Has anyone used this board with Unraid or Proxmox and successfully done passthrough for multiple devices?

Does anyone have an IOMMU group dump they could share (e.g., from /sys/kernel/iommu_groups/)?

I’d prefer to avoid relying on ACS override if possible, so clean grouping out of the box is ideal. Any insight or experience with this board would be greatly appreciated before I finalize the purchase!

Thanks in advance!

I'm not that advanced with Unraid yet but I do have the ASRock z790 Pro RS WiFi with 14600k. I haven't installed my Arc 310 Eco GPU yet. Is that what you are looking for in System Devices?

Thanks! I’m still in the planning and parts-buying phase — I’m currently running Unraid with Docker containers and a NAS setup, and I’m looking to level up my build. The new system will prioritize Docker and storage performance, with Quick Sync via the iGPU for Jellyfin transcoding. Down the line, I plan to add a gaming VM with GPU and USB passthrough, so I’ve been researching IOMMU grouping and PCIe layout to make sure I’m covered.

For storage, I’ll start with two or more 14TB HDDs plus a parity drive. I don’t need an HBA yet, but I wanted to make sure the board could support one later if needed — your screenshot helped a lot there, especially seeing that the USB controller has its own IOMMU group.

If you’ve run into any quirks with passthrough or Quick Sync in Unraid on this board, I’d love to hear about it. And once I build things out, I’ll share an updated IOMMU map to help others too.

My main use is I run an Emby container and most of my media is converted to HEVC/X265. I have ran 8 4k mixed streams where only 2 devices were 4k capable. I saw that Emby was transcoding 6 of the streams and they seemed to be fine with the stock iGPU. I'm not sure if that is a proper test but I don't think I have ever used more than 3 streams in daily use. My media players were Galaxy S23, 2*shield TV, FireTV tablet, 2*PCs 1080p display, 2*FireTV on 1080p TVs. I plan to do more with Home assistant, frigate, and automated library conversion, I will also be retiring my daily windows PC and setting the image up as a VM.

I do run a view dockers and I never had problems with my 13600t and 64gb ram but I decided to up the performance since I will be retiring my Windows box with Drive Bender that used to be my Emby server.

I'm also going to be making a backup Unraid server out of my old Antec 900 case with a new q670 MB and the 13600t and 65gb ram. I haven't found anyone using the MB yet so that will be interesting.
