Is my Drive Toast?

Featured Replies

Woke up to alerts on my server looks like disk1 has 1922 errors and has been disabled and contents emulated.

Server kernel: md: disk1 write error, sector=11070194240server-diagnostics-20250625-1030.zip

Will be looking for a new replacement drive today but not sure if I need to do anything with a disabled drive or can I replace as normal?

Looks like it dropped offline, check the cable/connections, reboot and post new diagnostics

It's showing up now at least - there's 25 re-allocated sectors on it so at a minimum I'd run a long SMART test on it, but if it was under warranty I'd have it replaced.

Out of warranty, so will have to go to the junk heap, got a replacement coming tomorrow.

Yeah, I'm not sure that was really an issue - only another extended test would be sure. Personally, even if it passed I'd send it to backup duty due the reallocated sectors.

Replaced disk but something happened and all the drives went offline, the disk rebuild paused, so went shutdown and went back to check everything and started server up again. But now it doesnt seem to be rebuilding the disk. I have just stopped the array.

Do I need to set disk1 back to no device start array, stop array then assign the new 12TB drive?

Looks like the HBA lost contact with the expander, all disks dropped at the same time.

Before starting to rebuild again, make sure emulated disk1 is mounting, also worth check/reconnect the cables to the expander.

Checked all the connections and removed and added the HBA card back in. I think the breakout cable was loose this is now clicked in.

The disk is available and emulated and has option to spin down but dont see how to start rebuild.
